Santa Anita for Saturday 30 March 2013

[private]

Good looking race card this afternoon. Four of the nine races rated better than average clarity.  Word of warning that on Easter Sunday the comments might be somewhat abbreviated.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Bob Consultation   decent move forward in 2nd lifetime start both in pace and final time......two reassuring 4F drills since and a rider upgrade

1  Justamitch   good looking work regiment for this 1st timer on the conventional dirt at Pln.........works hint this newbie has some early gas.......and Bonde/Maldonado do awfully well with speed horses

2  Lucky Cotton   broke poorly and then showed some life in his MSW debut which was on the grass down the hill.....likely will prefer the dirt with his pedigree and gets to see it here in his 2nd lifetime start

4  Ethnic Dance

race 2    slightly above average clarity

4  Smokey Lonesome   very good history 2nd out after a layoff and that is the case here.......and drops to 40K.......gelding has been quite stout when he competes between the 40K and 50K level

1  Diamondsdiplomat   obvious lone speed in this affair so he will have to be caught......claimed for 50K and drops to 40K......and why not as the purse is $58K and even 2nd place is a break even proposition if he gets claimed again

5  Hawkedon   blocked about 3 lengths in the stretch or would have been right there at the wire in a race down the hill at today's level in his last.......solid endurance building 6F turf work since......decent win at Tampa in a turf route race.......shot here if he manages to fire his best

2  Father of Science

race 3    slightly above average clarity

1  Only The Gold   endurance building 1 1/8th mile grass race in last......very good works since especially for Marty Jones who doesn't push his stock too hard in the a.m.......back to the dirt where he is a better racehorse

7  Firetruck Jay   earned his best adjusted for trouble fig (way wide) in a long time......repeat of the effort with a cleaner trip fits quite well here

4  Lite That Baby   back to the dirt for today which seems to be his best surface........whole career has been around two turns......experience factor seems like a plus

8  Derekson

race 4    average clarity

8  Chila Ali    trainers at her best 2nd out after a claim and that is the case here for this filly......lone race on conventional dirt is solid and it was run at today's 5 1/2 furlong distance too boot

10  Cicular Logic    owns significant early gas......5 1/2 furlongs might really help this underachieving Mitchell runner hold together

7  Shamefully Sinful   solid work regiment for this Hendricks 1ster especially considering the racing level of race 4.........and mom has tossed 7 winners from 7 starters......rivals the mom of Major League Baseball's Alou brothers

13  Bluegrass Ellie

race 5    average clarity

5  Colburn    1st on the lawn and that should be a good thing with his pedigree......big effort 3 races back at a mile on the dirt and the recent work regiment hints he will be up to another strong effort today

7  Major Affair   both lifetime sprint races are just slightly less than par and I believe this colt will be better suited for the turf.......mom has produced 2 grass winners

8  Scatman Blues   another who sure is bred nicely for the sod.......sired by a hot new sire of turf runners in Scat Daddy.......works for this 1st timer seem good enough to be dangerous in his MSW debut

4  Cole Cole

race 6    slightly above average clarity

2  Sweet Marini   ultra impressive MSW debut win way back in early November for this Baffert filly both in final time and pace........worked powerfully prior to that successful debut and is working just as well or better for today's big race

9  Doinghardtimeagain   hard to argue in any way with 2 wins and 3 2nd's by 1/2 length in 5 lifetime sprint races......works are stellar and the trainer/rider combo of Hollendorfer/Bejarano has been sizzling hot over the last 3 months

7  Hail Mary   bad journey in last hides a move forward in her 2nd lifetime start.......can compete for the top prize here if she moves forward once again and receives a better trip from her new rider

5  Marks Mine

race 7    slightly below average clarity

5  McAllister Boys   faced way too tough in latest......claimed in the race by Hollendorfer who gave this gelding some time off and then put some nice works into him.....back to a level he can handle.......and once again we have that white hot trainer/rider team mentioned above

10  Patriot's Voyage   1st ever on the green carpet for this Baffert runner but the five year old owns an adequate pedigree for it........shot to go wire to wire here if he does

3  Lumberyard Jack   best race for this gelding is usually 2nd out after layoffs and that is the scenario here......a ton if he brings his "A game"

4  Deacon Speakin' (tie for 4th)

9  Arraignment  (tie for 4th)

race 8    average clarity

4  Could Be Trouble   filly (versus the boys) ran a strong number in latest but more importantly she did it under a hand ride in the stretch that suggests there is plenty in the tank with 3 lbs less to carry than her last.......and a rider upgrade (not a rider upgrade in past for you Gary Steven's fans which I am one of)

2  Follini   lack of speed types in this race especially for in a race of this kind........most likely leader and sure can compete here with a logical small move forward in 2nd lifetime start

6  Indian Classic   solid layoff effort in last 1st time as a gelding........impressive (I feel even better) works since including a bullet 3F work 3 days ago hinting he will show better early speed which looks like a good thing here

9  Omega Star   seems better suited to sprinting so my guess is this Shirreffs runner rebounds to a solid (late running) effort after a dull route race in latest......might need more pace than anticipated to put in her best closing effort

race 9    slightly above average clarity

3  The Director    3 of his 5 lifetime sprint races would crush these........laid up over a year but training as if extremely meant and ready to roll fresh off of the bench for O'Neill

9  Banged His Eye   done little wrong in both lifetime starts on fast rated dirt.......and an improved drill since is last......can take this with a significant move forward or if our top pick falters

1  Priddis Wildcat    trainer is decent 2nd out after a claim which is the scenario here......recent bullet drill hints at a rebound.......big effort/fig 4 races back.....danger city here if his new conditioner gets that race out of him

6  Catquest

4  Prized By Buck

11  Smokenomore
