Santa Anita for Friday 5 April 2013

So so card this afternoon but a terrific Santa Anita Derby Day card Saturday both quality wise and I believe wagering wise. Selections will be posted no later than 8:30 a.m. Pacific time.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Playful Humor   very strong (lifetime best and better than par for the level) race on the grass the last time this Drysdale charge ran off of a layoff.......4 1/2 months since this filly last ran

1  Thisonesforricky   Jones filly seems to have run into shape......1st on the turf but owns an OK pedigree to handle it.......sure appreciated 1 mile on the dirt......1 mile on the grass here

7  Fantastic Mizz   filly has done little wrong in 4 lifetime races on the sod including 2 that were run at today's distance......decent early speed and a decent shot to clear the field by the turn and be loose on the lead or chasing close-up

5  Liar Liar Liar

race 2    average clarity

2  Chinese Praise   last 3 races fit fine trainer Lewis off of the claim and he seems to have a good spot here as he sure looks like the controlling speed in this field of 6 despite the step up of one notch in claiming

3  Classy Lion   trainer is red hot the last few here if his last is nothing but an up the track gimme for a full throttle go 2nd out after the layoff

5  Muchos Besos   claimed for 20K and eased in the race.......that hurts.......drops to 10K......obviously a bad claim but he might have one or two more races left in him

race 3    average clarity

1  Spring Bloom   wide trip in last hides lifetime best.......last 3 grass races are par or better for this afternoon's 32K level

3  Toomanytomatoes    better horse off of the pace.....drops to level below what O'Neill took her for.......that is usually a very dangerous thing

5  Love Tale   par like effort in latest.......rider upgrade for today......last win which was 5 races back came off of 17 days rest.......22 days since her last here

6  Four Better

race 4    average clarity

4  Samurai Jess   hard trying sort in all 4 lifetime races........filly had a good move forward in her last and it is disguised by a poor trip where she checked a couple of lengths early and ran wide.......same effort/energy with a relatively clean trip and she should be tough

1  Sweet Nectar   all 4 lifetime sprints on conventional dirt fit well here......good rider/trainer combo in Espinoza/Belvoir

3  Abella   not the best of trainers off of long layoffs but if this mare is ready and runs her last SA dirt race (which was back in April of 2012) then lookout as that effort would likely take this affair

race 5    average clarity

1  Noblis   both races run in France on firmer turf were solid efforts (a win and a second in a Grade 3).....most off her overseas efforts were versus better.....and......1 1/4 on the grass is right up her alley

4  The Only Key   7 year old mare has plenty of experience and some success at today's 1 1/4 mile distance......nice work series for this Dean Greenman runner who doesn't push them too hard in the a.m.

2  Warren's Got Game   improved effort in latest with the switch to the meets top gun......seems like a good sign that he remains in same or better effort likely this afternoon

5  Miss Ellany

Long-shot possibilities:   6  Demonsterous   last two firm rated turf efforts are quite a bit better than appear in print and the 1 1/8th mile turf race 5 back (good late close from last into a lackluster pace up front) hints another 1/8th of a mile might be a plus

race 6    average clarity

6  Fast Stop    works prior to mc75K debut were so since are impressive........that suggests debut was the tightening tune-up and that a full throttle go can be expected today

7  Wave Catching   was training nicely but worked a bullet 3F drill of 34:4 the day before his maiden debut race which seems a bit too strenuous for any horse to handle.......nice 5F work since and hopefully no blowout work on Thursday

1  El Sabios   laid up since August but drops and his interval training is impressive not time wise but in how closely spaced the drills are......every 5 days.......might be wound up like a top and ready to roll......come on 2 for 70 Jose Valdivia Jr.

2  Check Out My Face

race 7    slightly below average clarity

6  He Be Fire N Ice   believe layoff run in last on the dirt was just part of the work regiment to be ready for his 1st ever route grass race which he is well bred to handle.....drills are quite impressive for his new trainer Sadler

2  Tribe   handles turf sprints rather well.....1st at a turf route but bred just fine for one and Carla Gaines is very dangerous 1st time at a route with a given horse

1  Sizzlin' Joe   last sure appears to be the layoff sprint tightener to be fully conditioned to get today's 1 mile on the grass......and Marty Jones changes jocks to the meetings leading rider to get the job done

3  Pulpit's Express

race 8    slightly below average clarity

1  Patriotic Lion   good post for the best looking early speed in the race to shake loose and attempt to go wire to wire........and 1st time Bejarano

2  Vamping the Win   trainer has been rather hot of late......never easy to get a 1st starter to run well  in a two turn affair but the works are rather good.......the gelding is bred nicely to get a route of ground.......and Hofmans is quite good with maiden claiming 1sters

3  Swiss Emperor   horse sure fits effort/fig/distance wise (especially on conventional dirt) but he sure will need to overcome a serious tendency to hang in the stretch

9  Captain Corrigan

7  Ever Alert

5  Heavenly Load
