Santa Anita for Saturday 20 April 2013

Nice looking card once again today the second to last day of the Santa Anita Winter/Spring meeting.

Most often our very best meeting is Hollywood's Spring/Summer meeting and it is next. Can't wait!

Best of luck as always even for the often hard on the capper Mr. G. F.

race 1    average clarity

2  Brooklyn Rose    good route racing at SA especially figure wise......last chance to run on it's conventional dirt surface till fall......has never raced lower

6  Fiesta Express   another who should be all out today to take advantage of her last race on the SA surface where she is (4 2 0 2)......(22 1 2 3) on other surfaces

4  Racy Rosa   in good form sprinting and now attempts her 1st ever running long.......pedigree says she should be able to handle the two turns

race 2    average clarity

3  Salty Forecast   whole career fig./effort wise fits here and the cut back in distance appears to be a good fit........hasn't raced since Sept. but her best ever was her maiden debut so she showed she can fire fresh

5  Floatthrutheair   sure worked impressively on the SA main track prior to running a poor race on the grass........drops from top to bottom in her 2nd lifetime start for her 1st on the surface she worked so well on......seems very formidable if she runs like she works

1  Diva On Track    works at Slr are decent for this 1st timer........5% (in 2012/13) trainer but it is easier to get a three year old ready to compete at the abbreviated sprint distance of 5F than at moe typical sprint distances of 6F and beyond

4  Betty Portlock

race 3    way below average clarity

(toss out 2nd morning line choice no. 3 and here's what is left split by hairs)

5  Brannaman   Bob Baffert runner  is a 1st time gelding today and that seems rather significant for a horse that sold for $500,000 at sale.........of since Jan. but has never trained better (on paper at least)

2  Blue Tone   work regiment for this Hess st timer is solid..........and mom has tossed 5 winners from 6 starters........rather sure this one is meant and ready for debut

4  Boccelli   not much in 3 starts last spring but did set an incredible pace in his last start opening up by 13 lengths in the early stages of a 1 mile grass race at CD.......returns today working like a vastly improved horse for John Shirreffs

6  Top Drive

1  Canelo

race 4    slightly above average clarity

4  Lady Of Shamrock    runs all day long and owns the best grass 1/4 on the sod today sure seems like a good fit

7  Moone's My Name   solid 1st ever in the good old U S of A in latest..........small move forward and 6lbs off gives her at shot at an upset today

1  The Only Key   in very good form now......deserves a shot at the big time......most experienced horse at the distance 1 1/4.......still.......will need lifetime best today

race 5    average clarity

2  Valen   on the improve with every start.......and only off pace runner in the field.....should be flying late

6  A Thousand Aces   Doug O'Neill runner is on the right end of the learning well spotted to win......and runs with 4 lbs. less than his last today

5  Banged His Eye   1 win and 1 second at today's abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2 furlongs......fits fine if he rebounds after a dull effort in latest

4  Always The Same

race 6    slightly above average clarity

8  Appealing    impressive 1st in the USA run in latest........wide in a race down the hill and still closed well........very reassuring grass works since and 1st time Bejarano......very appealing

9  Sweet Assay   trainer has had his best meeting in many a moon.......and his filly here sure was impressive in her MSW debut setting solid pace down the SA hill grass course and holding on for the 5F work since......3 lbs less to carry than last.......same or better likely today

4  Candy And Thunder   faced better in last.....and ran better than appears in print with a wide trip.........and gets a rider upgrade for today

6  Possible

race 7    average clarity

1  Derringer   big efforts in 2 of his last 3 races one of which was at today's 5 1/2 furlong distance......hasn't been seen for 10 weeks but his stout a.m. work says he is returning as good as before or maybe even better

3  Field Report   better than par for today's level of racing and.......the abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2 furlongs sure appears to be an excellent fit

4  Bob Consultation   just keeps getting better........and better.........and better.........and will be very formidable here if the trend stays intact this afternoon

6  Noble Exchange

race 8    average clarity

2  Chips All In   powerful 1st ever down the majestic SA hill grass course in last........hasn't missed a beat in the morning since pointing to today's Grade 3 race

3  Obviously   ultra consistent grass runner has been away since November but runs well fresh.......would easily have been top pick if this race was around two turns but he has a little more to prove (at least figure wise) down the hill.....still he is very dangerous here

6  Drill   very good sprint history/numbers sprinting on AW surfaces......that usually bodes well for one's chances of handling the grass......and his grass pedigree is OK as well

7  Koast

race 9    slightly above average clarity

5  Street Maven   takes the ever dangerous drop out of MSW racing to low level mdn claiming for a trainer (Kitchingman) who seemingly would like to pad his eye popping record at the meeting to 8 wins in 19 starts by winning this race.......both lifetime grass races fig/effort wise fit if he can duplicate them on the dirt today

8  Sports Report    last two efforts fit fine here........being distance fit is usually a plus when attempting to race 7F which he is about to this afternoon

11  Kingsbury   another Kitchingman runner with a shot at the winners circle off of two solid slightly better than par efforts in last two races.......7F seems like a good should be flying late with light weight apprentice up

1  Ten Tequilas

13  Beast Of Bourbon

4  Indian Spirit
