Del Mar for Thursday 15 August 2013

Don't miss out on a great day of racing (12 race card) at my old stomping grounds at Arlington Park where the stars of turf racing compete for the title of the Arlington Million (GI), Beverly D. (GI), Secretariat Stakes (GI), American St. Leger Stakes, and the Hatoof Stakes. No better card of grass racing in the USA outside of day 2 of the Breeders Cup and on the best grass course in the Country.

Decent race card this afternoon with the last 4 races rather exciting if my handicapping is sound as the average morning line of the four races is over 9 to 1.  Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Echo Zulu   on the right end of the ever important learning process and now we get a trainer change to Peter Miller.......he sees fit to add blinkers and the recent 5F drill......screams......good move for the crafty conditioner

1  Jedi Mind Trick   like our top selection this 2-year-old switches trainers to another sharp S Cal conditioner in John Sadler and also has an impressive 5F work in preparation for today's higher level of competition

5  Snowmass Village   pounded at the windows in mc debut and did not disappoint winning by a going away at the wire 5 lengths.......and has worked well since........same or more seems likely today

race 2    slightly above average clarity

7  Pleasant Miss   strong efforts in all 3 lifetime races......has faced better in last two affairs and still ran 2nd and 3rd.........the one to beat if she handles her 1st ever on the Del Mar AW

1  Larocco   broke 3 slow and ran wide and still managed to break her maiden at 1st asking.........and since she is doing great in the a.m. on the Del Mar surface

2  One More Wild Ride    Calder invader fits the race condition well and owns a pedigree that has a good chance of handling AW surfaces well........Mulhall is quite dangerous 1st time out after receiving a new runner

6  Rovenna

race 3    slightly below average clarity

4  Two Blue Hens   nothing that special in what this filly has shown in 4 lifetime races but her recent drill on the Dmr synthetic is........and the logical drop out of MSW racing is almost always a plus

9  Pearl de Vere   handled her 1st race in S Cal and Dmr quite well......showed plenty of life after breaking slowly.......all 3 lifetime races with Lasix and without the blinkers are good

10  Wishcraft   last sure looked like a public work-out to yours truly and if I am correct this Gallagher runner is very dangerous on the drop down today

2  Lucky Student

Long-shot consideration:   1  She's a Minx   another who appears to have messed up the form some as to drop and not be claimed......big back number versus tons better at Dmr in 2011

and another long-shot consideration:   8  Visions of Candy   scratched out of Mdn20K Wednesday (was going to be my top pick till she scratched).........solid adjusted for about 7L trouble fig in last

race 4    slightly below average clarity

2  Pennies from Denny   best ever in at Dmr..........and her trainer is finally awakening after being in the doldrums for a very long time period

8  Vindicated Ruler   invader has done little wrong in 4 lifetime starts......might be a good claim by Morey who has won with 40% of his last 210 claims 1st out after the claim

3  Twirlybird    simply put her best ever was her lifetime debut and that race fits well year hiatus from racing bodes well for her chances of being ready to roll fresh off of the bench today

7  Disco Lemonade

race 5    average clarity

7  Topper's Ghost   solid series of works for a 3 week period 30 June to 21 July......believe backed off since so as not to be claimed in his maiden debut today.......good barn has been cold and is overdue due to get things going

4  Full's Kris S.   new trainer for this five-year old maiden and Baltas seems to have him ready to roll off of the extended hiatus from the track.......lone effort at Dmr (his maiden debut) was stellar and it was at the difficult distance of 7F for a 1ster

2  Preacher's Bluff   needed last and/or works since......drop city.........much more likely today

1  Italian Mirage

race 6    average clarity

3  Seven Bridges   both lifetime route races stand out as so much his best efforts to likely was a sprint tune-up to be tight and ready back at a route this afternoon

5  Lite That Baby Up   solid last and might move forward off the effort being that today's race is his 2nd out after a layoff......would have been top choice if it wasn't for his tendency to hang some

7  Jay's Firetruck   seems to run best with lighter weight (more than most do) so switch to app ought to be a good thing

9  Noble Kent

race 7    slightly below average clarity

7  Caramuru   talk about loving being on his 1st ever loose lead............won by 9 or 10 (9 1/4 in the chart) considering he is well bred to get 1 3/8ths it seems like an intelligent move by Avilia to enhance his chances at getting loose once again by placing him in a marathon affair........should be a price as he has yet to hit the board in 3 lifetime grass races (hopefully because he wasn't loose on the lead)

1  Bench Light   last off of 2 months rest (and at today's seldom run distance) is fairly decent and his history suggests he will make a forward move back in shorter rest today.....solid here if he does

4  Vibratto Jazz   last 3 grass races aren't bad but lookout if he fires his effort run 4 races back which is somewhat disguised by a poor journey

9  Sumerian

race 8    average clarity

11  Hard Play   last at 5-2 odds looks like a bad effort on paper but it was not.........broke tardy and ran wide on a somewhat inside day....did well to only get beat by five lengths.....blinkers on to help find the early speed he showed in his previous to races

3  Stormin Lute   obviously this Baffert runner didn't come out of his MSW back on 11 May in the best of shape to be in for maiden 20K today following a nice near miss 2nd......has been hitting the track every week since 25 May.......very strange........healthy enough or not........toss a coin

7  Di Conte   conventional dirt debut in 2012 was decent especially considering today's racing level........disliked the grass in next start on 27 June 2013.........very good drills since with his last two works being at Dmr.........sure seems meant and ready today

13 AE  Dramatic Allan

8  Nicholas M

10  Jimmy The Whip
