Santa Anita for Friday 1 November 2013

Had to tweak some of my selections for today after watching the loose on the rail horse run 1st or 2nd in all six dirt races yesterday. Considering last year we had a 1-2 path bias for the Breeders Cup we might be looking at similar for this weekend. We shall see.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    slightly below average clarity

3  Ankeny Hill   42:3 half down the hill in his 1st effort ever on the sod and still only got beat by 1/2 length for the win.......8 lbs off with apprentice up today.......must be caught........reassuring sharp recent works

5  Love De Car   chased our top selection in latest and he paid a guess is that the connections will try to take back some early as Leparoux is good at getting a horse to relax early and save something in the tank for the stretch

9  He's Had Enough   lone lifetime win came sprinting on the AW and it was this runner's MSW debut.......handled the grass just fine last Sept in a one mile affair........ laid up since March but blinkers on for today and training as if he is ready to roll just as he was in his MSW debut

11  U S Citizen    very consistent sort........must overcome a tough post

8  Pure Loyalty    needs race two back.....needs to handle 1st ever down the hill

race 2    average clarity

2  Got Even   owns tons of talent when racing on the SA surface......capable of setting nasty fractions and holding together..........laid up 10 months but sure seems ready to roll in his lone shot to run on his favorite surface till the last week in December or beyond

6  Door's Open   hard to argue with 3 for 3 on the conventional dirt at SA.......really responded to the change in riders to Nakatani in latest.....has always been in the hunt from the get go

13  Wild Dude   last was a par like effort but his a.m. work since is vastly improved......seems likely to move forward today and forward off of a par effort is a goooood thing

9  Cat Burglar   strong route win in latest in his 2nd lifetime start......route fitness is often a plus cutting back to 7 furlongs.........5 lbs off today and back in relatively short rest......Baffert youngster should be motoring late

11  Dover Crazy   improving Ron Ellis runner

race 3    slightly above average clarity

2  Life Is A Joy   strong route final time for the level in latest supported by large gaps to 2nd and 3rd in a race at Fno.........shot to make if 4 for 4 lifetime with a the solid blast from the past rider/trainer combo of Rosario/Hollendorfer.....should be in it from the get go

7  Tamarando   another Hollendofer proven route runner has faired well in open company and now runs versus Cal-breds......late runner should be motoring late with an excellent off the pace jock in the saddle in Leparoux

1  California Chrome   Art Sherman runner sure is on the right end of the learning curve and appears all set for his 1st ever over a route of ground with an exceptionally impressive work regiment at Bhp including an eye popping (especially for 2 year old) 1:38 flat on Oct 17th.....1st on the conventional but owns a decent pedigree for it

4  Cinmars Dance   sprinter has plenty to prove at a route but owns dangerous speed and speed had a field day yesterday

race 4    below average clarity

7  Whatsallthedrama   just fired lifetime best in her 1st ever at SA and the effort was hidden by a poor trip.....broke 3 slow from the gate and ran on a dull rail.........1st at a route.........but.........she is bred to be likely better in routes than sprints......good sign that Bejarano wants the mount for a 4th consecutive time

2  Cal Gal   solid awakening in last her 1st on turf....she won to break her MSW versus open she must handle two new endeavors....1st on the conventional dirt and 1st at a route......excellent pedigree (especially for a Cal-bred) to handle both

9  Moving Desert   owns some significant early gas and it is somewhat our 2nd pick she needs to handle her 1st on conventional dirt and 1st going long......1st time Stevens to help her with her new endeavors

6  Harlington's Rose    good speed jock will try to get the jump on the field.......speed rail day yesterday

race 5    average clarity

10  Gervinho   runs well with ample time off between races and gets it.......impressive 6F turf drill to finish off a nice work series in preparation of today's race......excellent history with today's rider aboard.......seems highly likely to get a nice stalk position behind what looks like an affair that favors speed

2  Charming Kitten   handles any turf condition but seems most reliable on firm turf.......good history with Velasquez up.......ground saving mid pack to close up position seems to be in the cards for today

12  Gabriel Charles   down little wrong in 3 lifetime grass his last two efforts he ought to be flying in the late stages of this Grade 2 event especially if there ends up being more pace up front than I anticipate

5  Rookie Sensation   gets there with bad trips.....what might he do with a good trip

9  Procurement   long-shot fires best off of short rest........12 days sure qualifies as "short rest"

race 6    average clarity

4  Ever Rider   Argentina invader has won his last three races (including a Grade 2 in last with 15 runners) at 1 1/2 miles or longer......nobody in this ultra marathon affair can say similar.....sure like that he has been training at Santa Anita for the last couple of months

2  Cease   six-year-old is on the rebound and is bred to run all day long which comes in handy for a race of 14 furlongs.......trainer David Jacobson is all business when he ships and in this case he has to ship coast to coast

6  Indian Jones   vastly improved since Phil Aristone snatched at the claiming box.......just missed in a deep muddy (slow surface) 1 1/2 Grade 3 at Prx.........that bodes well for him to get the extra 2 furlongs as he is as good a horse or maybe even better on "fast" tracks

5  Suns Out Guns Out    in good form.....1 1/2 mud race 2 back is decent

8  Blueskiesnrainbows   gets brave when loose and appears to have the best early speed here........might need yesterday's rail bias

race 7    slightly below average clarity

5  Bobby's Kitten   Chad Brown has turned into to an awfully good grass trainer......Kitten's Joy has turned into a heck of a nice turf sire..........colt has progressed solidly in his 3 lifetime races.....and considering he won his last by more than 6L in a Grade 3 at Belmont he ought to be one stout horse to overcome if he manages another forward move.....and he's not too shabby if he repeats his last either

4  Outstrip   impressive Graded turf efforts in last 3 in GB........and.......M Smith gets the mount and he and his agent sure seem terrific these days at finding live mounts

2  Giovanni Boldini   another overseas invader who has done little wrong in 3 lifetime starts.........and the Euro's sure do well in the B C Juvy grass races as there is little emphasis on grass prowess for two year olds in the U S of A

13  Bashart   good horse on a nasty post.......Velasquez will most likely have the pedal to the metal early

8  Bon Accord   long-shot is improving in each and every race......clever a clever rider in the saddle

race 8    slightly below average clarity

5  Fed Biz   very solid history in two turn mile races..........capable of cranking things up early and handling solid paces.......and showed he can run from out of it if need be in his last

10  Verrazano    owns a touch of speed but I doubt enough to clear so my guess is he will need a clever ride to get on over by turn one......seems like the one to beat (off of some crushing career wins) if the jock can get the job accomplished

2  Golden Ticket   very stout runner when he brings his "A game" for one at today's one mile distance and draws a good post....... Kenny McPeek is a very dangerous trainer with price shots on "big days"

6  Broadway Empire    4 for 4 on conventional dirt.......won those races at smaller circuits but by an average of 7 1/2 lengths

4  Brujo De Olleros    seems likely to get a good ground saving mid pack position behind plenty of early speed

race 9    average clarity

4  Kitten Kaboodle   nice improvement 1st time out under the guidance of Chad Brown.....filly destroyed foes in a Grade 3 at handles the turns nicely and that is a plus especially at SA where the turns are tight.......also like the jock change especailly on a one of the biggest days in racing

8  Chriselliam    both lifetime one mile grass races in GB are impressive..........somewhat strung out field at the wire in her last a Grade 1 win at Newmarket......visually impressive too

2  Al Thakhira   won both lifetime races in GB by an impressive average of 3 lengths......good looking finish at the wire winning a Grade 2 by 3 1/4.......big factor today if she can handle his new environment

6  Vorda   hard to argue with 4 wins and a 2nd in 5 starts in France and Great Britian

7  Street Sailing   hello turf.......big wake-up 1st ever on the grass in a race at Keeneland........dangerous with new stout connections for today

1  Nesso   improving Belvoir runner might be there if the rider holds his inside position till the stretch drive

race 10    slightly above average clarity

5  Beholder   capable of setting blazing fractions and holding together.....comes off of two straight easy paced wire to wire wins which I love because I highly doubt it stressed her physically whatsoever.......feeling good

4  Royal Delta   ultra consistent Bill Mott five-year-old mare will likely stalk our top choice and try and ponce in the stretch drive......stout mare continues to train as if she remains a happy healthy individual

6  Princess of Sylmar   first ever at SA but she has handled 5 different racetracks with 8 wins and a 2nd in 10 starts so I doubt the SA surface will be a problem......connections will have their fingers crossed that our top two choices will turn up the heat on one another

race 11    average clarity   (Grade 1 Arabian three and up)

9  Smoke House   ultra consistent especially for an Arabian

6  Grilla   seems to be in top form.......would have been top pick if it wasn't for the fact she appears to one in "lead type only"

10  Ms Dixie   5 year old mare seems very deserving at a shot at the big time even versus the boys......she has won impressively at times when running in two turn races

7  Ayers   kicks it in late.....seems to like the 1 1/16th mile distance
