Santa Anita for Friday 17 January 2014

O.K. race card to start the extended weekend as there is racing on Monday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Too Obvious   on the improve with every start since the blinkers were added to this young lady's arsenal........bad trip in last or would have graduated by many instead of by a head.......continues to train like a happy healthy individual

1  Time for Angie    1st time in claiming sure woke this Walter Solis filly up in her last......1st time Bejarano didn't hurt either.......same tag and same jock.........shot for the same result

2  Pay the Debt   last on the Bhp AW fits quite well here......but......still has quite a bit to prove on conventional dirt.........seems like a big race for the connections because if she doesn't handle the SA surface's a long time until AW racing returns to S Cal at Dmr

race 2    slightly below average clarity

2  Kylee's Star    sprint - sprint - route scenario is especially interesting coming off of two 7F sprints........Cassidy won his 1st race of the meeting as our top pick in Thursday's 8th (wake-up time?)........2 best efforts in 9 race career were the two times this filly ran off of relatively short rest of 3 weeks.........21 days since her last

5  Just Dancing   turf race fits and AW race fits......last at SA on the dirt might not........claimed by Mitchell and he brings right back in 2 trainer likely needs to get a rebound out of his new filly.......tough call

6  Visions of Candy   both lifetime route endeavors without the blinkers on fit and the efforts are hidden by an average of 7 lengths of trouble........Blanc owes the connections a better rider and/or Bell needs to teach this filly better habits in the a.m........lookout if that task gets accomplished

race 3    slightly above average clarity

2  Lilly's Perfect   most of career fits well in this spot but there is still the ? mark of her 1st ever endeavor running as far as 1 1/8th miles on the grass........good late finishes the last two times she ran at 1 1/16th on the grass bodes well for her ability to get the extra 1/16th

7  Highly Rated   sure looks loose on the lead here......did blow an easy lead in last but it was off a layoff......and.....rather impressively has works 3 times since her last on Dec 22nd........might be feeling awfully good

4  English Crossing   toss out last (a non-claiming event) as this mare wants no part of AW it a dirty her up gimme........drops precipitously today to cut losses.......1 for 1 at the distance and it was a going away at the wire 3 1/4 length win

1  Love Tale

race 4   average clarity

1  Unkept Rendez Vous   seems likely to get a distance chase or near chase position behind our 2nd pick and with a 10 lbs apprentice in the irons......nice improved work since this mare's last which was run only 19 days ago.......might be ready for a move forward

3  Acute   speed type sprinter tries long here.......and she sure lucks into a spot void of early speed besides her own of course..........wire shot here if T C Baze (who looks like he has gotten his feet wet and is ready to strut his stuff) gets her to settle down and rate kindly thru the early stages

2  Splendiferous moon   not the best of claims by Mullins but he gives this mare ample time off to possibly mount a comeback this afternoon..........1st ever on the conventional dirt but owns a decent pedigree for it

race 5    average clarity

5  Boyett   four-year-old gelding has done little wrong in 3 lifetime starts on the sod and has drawn top jocks for all three races which is a good sign........and in this race Bejarano looks as if he had the choice of many in here and stuck with this Glatt runner

2  Vibratto Jazz   consistent off pace runner seems to fire every time out but...........she sure needs to overcome a tendency to flatten out late and hang when it counts the the wire

4  Would You   first on the green carpet but owns a good pedigree for it........ran a big effort on the dirt at Bsr so I doubt the 1 1/4 turf distance will be a problem......most likely a plus........trainer is often most dangerous 3rd out after layoffs which is the case today

6  Ashley's Bambino

race 6    average clarity

2  The Admiral   two better than par races in two lifetime starts including a route race at SA in his last.....blinkers off for today as I imagine Bob B. wants to slow this colt down so as to have more punch in the late stages

5  Rough Passage   solid move forward in 2nd lifetime start and 1st at a route.......two reassuring 5F works since.......lost to our top pick in his last by about a length.......not possible to overcome that one length today

4  Icy Ride   Baffert also takes the blinkers off of this colt who made significant progress in his last 1st time running a route of ground.......and like our 2nd pick he might beat his barn mate (our top choice) with another move in the right direction

9  Day of Fury

Long-shot consideration:    3  Argentine   believe his MSW debut which was down the hill on the grass was a public work-out as he drilled 7 days following the race and worked 4 days prior to his debut......plug that in and take a look at the tightly spaced work/run regiment and it sure appears to yours truly that he is being prepared for a route's route race

race 7    slightly below average clarity

6  Ambitious Brew   very consistent sort (5 2 3 0) who is the tepid top selection as his best efforts/figs have been produced on AW surfaces and not the grass.....but he is hard not to place on top as he has shown a strong desire to win on the grass

1  Rangi   just claimed by one sharp outfit out of the Midwest and East Coast in Panic trainer for the stable in Richard Baltas (good year for 2013) to handle the West Coast ......nice history for this GB born four-year-old sprinting on firm turf........and....... his only race at SA on the grass was a solid run (crossed the wire in 133:4)  in a 1 mile grass affair loaded with talent....1st - 2nd -3rd all returned to win

7  Kochess    proven on the SA hill turf course which is 1/2 the battle.......rider upgrade from a struggling jock to one that never seems to struggle.......dangerous

2  Raised a Secret

Long-shot consideration:    4  Sheer Talent    promising runner as a two-year-old in 2011 including running on the grass.........dismal three race 2012........useful looking layoff run (14 months) on 21 hint at a major rebound in form......and if he does rebound he might be on or near the lead in a race lacking speed

race 8   average clarity

5  Omar Little   broke slowly and ran wide in MSW debut sprinting on the grass at Bhp.......did well to only get beat by 6 1/4L........drops into maiden claiming and switches to the dirt which he is well bred for........and his trainer Peter Miller has won with 44% of his last 3 dozen runners 1st time in maiden claiming........yikes

7  Dehere Is Gone   Spawr 1st timer has worked copious furlongs in preparation for his hints of speed in the drills just endurance......but he sure is bred to have some early gas

6  Tasha's Courage   not much last summer on the Dmr AW......decent useful layoff run at SA 15 days ago........big threat here if this Armstrong four-year-old builds on the race

8  The Cleaners

9  Tommy's Kid

4  Buffalo Hills
