Santa Anita for Friday 7 February 2014

OK card today. Saturday's looks quite good as I have finished handicapping the first 8 races.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Oneandonlyloveman    best early gas here.....rider seem to be improving of late.....and a trainer who is awfully tough with speed horses in Jeff Bonde

2  Takem by Surprise   seems best at SA........has learned to rate somewhat which seems like a good thing here if I am right about the 1 horse

3  Still Unbroken   one win and one second when sprinting on the Santa Anita dirt........six panels here......seemingly needs to avoid a speed duel with our top pick one way or another

race 2    slightly below average clarity

2  Fit To Rule   the only one in this small field who doesn't flatten out late in his sprint races..........that seems significant for this late runner who likely won't deal with much traffic with a field of 5

5  Justa Gusta   woke up some in last and would have been top pick if this race was 5 1/2F like his last.....but it is at 6F where he tends to flatten out a little......still.....he is very dangerous here with the light wt app up and a trainer likely hungry for a win

4  Bob Consultation   doubt his last would do the trick......what we need is his effort 3 back with less of a wide trip and then he would be tough.........and maybe the one to beat here

race 3    slightly below average clarity

1  Caribe d'Oro   on the improve with every start........1st long and 1st on the sod but bred to handle both.....and last but maybe more significant we get major league rider upgrade

6  Lakota Road   same owners - new trainer ( Canani to O'Neill) for this filly who has run par like efforts in her last 2 of 3 races on the grass........Blanc and his agent must have politic to retain the mount as he is not someone O'Neill uses...... I like when a rider is under a little extra pressure

4  Majestic Minister   late runner retains Bejarano for a 4th straight time.....that is the good news.....bad news is that there doesn't appear to be much pace in the race to aid this deep closer.....but then again many a grass race doesn't shape up as it appears on paper

race 4    average clarity

2  Twin Six   seems very likely to get a nice stalk or mid pack position behind one or two suspect leaders............fig in last fits........rider upgrade for today

6  Joe Carl   Mulhall has won with 1/3 rd of her last two dozen 2nd out after a claim runners like this fellow is........eight-year-old seems to fire to some degree from far back in every race he runs on main track surfaces

3  Only the Gold   nice win in latest and I like the step up of a couple of claiming notches especially considering Belvoir has run this gelding for $8K in nine consecutive races

race 5    average clarity

1  Cernobbio   solid two turn grass race a Crc 2 back......and another solid two turn grass race at Bhp in her last running 2nd despite not receiving the best of trips.....10 post that day - 1 post today.......Espinoza has to like that to help him make amends

5  Common Confusion   on the right end of the learning curve......just claimed and his new conditioner puts up a fairly hot jock versus an ice cold jock.....1st on the lawn and 1st at a route........ owns a very good pedigree for both

9  Friendswith K Mill   debut 3 back is very strong (albeit on the dirt)  and somewhat hidden by a bad trip.......and his last (and 1st on the grass)  looks like a sprint tune-up of sorts to drop back into claiming fully fit and ready to rock and roll

2  Oso Smart

race 6    slightly above average clarity

3  Fury Kapcori  ultra impressive two drills considering the big effort this colt ran in his last.....dueled in solid pace and still popped an excellent (fastest of the meet) final time for 1 1/16th on the dirt......same jock and one pound less to carry.......such a deal

6  Majestic City   five-year-old is 1 for 1 at the distance (and it was at SA) and he does rather well when he runs in anything other than Graded Stakes......which...... he might have spent too many races running in without much success

7  Midnight Transfer   race might fall into this mid pack runners lap as our other 3 choices in the race all seem to prefer the front end of things

4  Batti Man

race 7    average clarity

5  Ay Ay Ay   very green/rank in debut to the tune of about 6 lengths........should be one tough cookie if she settles down in her 2nd lifetime endeavor as so many do

8  Unusual Style   sure owns a stellar turf pedigree and she showed some hints of her ability on the surface in her last which was her 2nd lifetime since that mid December race are vastly maybe enough....... seem likely today

6  Euroclydon   after missing by a nose two back at today's same distance - surface -  and level this filly washed out pretty bad in her latest.......rebound in form seems likely if of course her nerves don't get to her again

4  Warren's Empire

race 8    slightly above average clarity

6  More Later   Blake Heap 1st timer is working as if she should have been named "All At First Asking" instead of More Later as she sure is training as if the conditioner means business in her debut....and why not be ready as she is starting her career at five

1  Dream Baby  only one (someone dull) lifetime start way back on 1 July 2012 in a race at Hst.......but I believe Sean McCarthy has her ready off of a tightly spaced muscled her up series of works.......and her rider T C Baze seems to be fully back riding at a high level following a layoff

5  Amina Perfect   hidden forward move in her last her 2nd lifetime the jock switch for today from a struggling journeymen to an improving apprentice with and his 7lbs. weight break........and Marty Jones a very streaky trainer the last few years happens to be red hot now

8  Swiss Peak

4  Sargentina

2  Rich in Tradition
