Santa Anita for Sunday 23 February 2014

Another decent card today to finish off another week of racing. Be back with you on Thursday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Ryderroo   race two back for this filly her only effort sprinting with the blinkers on is solid considering today's lower level......and we get a jock upgrade from a struggling one to a reliable one

2  Fast Moka Too   two of four lifetime races fit here and the drop down makes sense as she has only managed 4 races since debuting on 17 July 2011

6  Swiss Heart   race 2 back is quite strong for this level..........but 3rd choice because she has yet to show very much on Santa Anita's conventional dirt main track

race 2    slightly above average clarity

3  Craving Carats   not really a drop as his latest race one claiming notch lower was restricted to four year old runners.......looks solid here 2nd start for Miller and back at one mile which appears to be his best turf distance

2  Hog's Hollow   not her favorite grass distance but 2 shorter (help out her early speed) works have been put in since her last and she might (and needs to) be fitter for today 2nd out after a prolonged absence fro the track

4  Mind The Master   best ever on the grass was at SA at today's distance of one mile......might need that effort and has to run it off of a 8 1/2 month layoff.....not impossible but a tall task

race 3    average clarity

6  Key Vista   when Baffert places a runner in for claiming for the 1st time and shows a prolonged stout work tab he is usually very difficult to beat.....but not usually the kind you want to claim

4  Sister Esperanza   on the right end of the learning curve and with few reasons not to believe the trend won't stay intact this afternoon.......and.......most likely she will need better today to compete with our top selection

3  Thermal Nermal   1st ever on a main track surface after 9 lifetime races on the grass......1/2 of those grass races fit fine here if she can match one of them running conventional dirt today.........tough call

race 4    average clarity

3  Roman Tizzy   overdo drop out of MSW racing as this five-year-old gelding has only beaten more than 1/2 the field in one of four lifetime races.....should fit well here if his form has remained the same

1  Right On Schedule   1st time sprinter with speed is usually a dangerous thing and T C Baze likely will be full throttle here t0 get loose and lonely on the lead

7  Fearsome Charisma   nice wake-up in latest his 1st running a route of ground in his 3rd lifetime start........plotter fits OK if he gets some pace and builds on his last

2  Curious Spy

race 5    average clarity

1  Proud Vixen   bad trip in last hides a decent effort for this East Coast shipper in his 1st endeavor in S. Cal......blinkers off for today (and assuming that he worked with them off) it seems to have improved his a.m. work and that bodes well for the p.m.

2  Legacy   solid move forward in last her 1st ever running long on the since are improved and the same bug boy gets to carry 3 lbs less today....move forward seems to be in the cards for today

5  Velvet Mesquite   done little wrong going 2 for 2 to start her career with both races being run down the hill........1st at a route and 1st on the dirt are the question marks

race 6    average clarity

6  Pathway to Yes   being a three-year-old early in the year he gets 8 lbs less.......and........he gets the hot apprentice on his back who I think can make the 107lbs assigned with his weight break....that my friends is  distinct advantage in weights even against older especially with a hot app up......1st on the turf but mom has tossed 3 grass winners

4  Fighting On   3 of his last 5 races fit including his last down the hill..........consistently tries hard but nothing special....... but....... this is a weak looking bunch

1  Cinco de Mario    new rider for this gelding who has had the same rider forever......very consistent sort in sprints but he might be somewhat of a hanger......good chance for an improving jockey in Arias to show what he can do

8  Clubhouse Rock

race 7    average clarity

7  Mosso   faced a tougher group in latest......was only 3L behind a horse who crushed his competition in his last......blinkers on for today / big recent drills........still fits if the blinkers don't do much for him but very solid here if they do as the works suggest

1  W. Giles   broke poorly in mc debut and then showed he can run some..........3 reassuring drills since and a positive rider switch......fits well with a cleaner break and a small forward move

5  Voluntary   last wasn't too bad but what we want to see his effort run 3 races back......jock was in a funk for the SA meeting when he last rode this colt on the last day of January but he is back riding well now......might be a bit too much esoteric thinking and hard to measure but it's got to be worth a length or two

4  Como Mi Padre

race 8    slightly above average clarity

1  Moonshine Bay   extremely sharp right now and retains Gary Stevens.......six-year-old has only one grass race and it was quite eventful.......he was pushed way wide pressing the pace in a 5F grass Stakes race at Santa Rosa........did extremely well to only get beat by 1 1/2L......likely to get a nice stalk position behind a suspect leader in the 5 horse

4  Unbridled's Note   very consistent down the SA hill with 3 wins in 6 races........won this Stakes race last year.....Nakatani knows the horse quite well........noy our top pick but most likely to hit the board by far

7  Clubhouse Ride   laid up since September but training as if he is returning all set to compete at a high level..........decent history on the hill and the hill races were run before he turned into a somewhat better racehorse later might pop lifetime best on the hill today

2  Pure Tactics

race 9    slightly above average clarity

(only 5 given for the Super High Five as this is only an 8 horse field)

6  Street Maven   dangerous laid up runner takes that magical drop out of MSW racing to the bottom mc level......and why not as he only went for $15K at sale........1st on the dirt but bred well to handle it..........and his grass route races sure fit well here

7  We Have Lift Off   another taking the significant plunge out of MSW racing.......owns solid early speed here so I imagine Gryder will attempt to open up a lead and wire

2  Indygo Andy   improving sort for John Sadler draws Desormeaux which seems significant as he doesn't exactly come into S Cal to rider cheap maidens...........colt appears to run all day.......should be closing fast in a field where many will be gasping late

5  Tempest Rising

1  Stauffenberg
