Del Mar for Friday 28 November 2014

Decent looking card for Friday. Let's call it 7 on the proverbial 1 to 10 scale.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

1  Warrior's Ridge   seems best on the Dmr AW so the barn likely will pull out all stops to get her to run her best and her best is strong here........blocked on the turn and the stretch in latest or it would have been graduation day

6  Zen Zal Sun   D'Amato 1st timer seems ready to roll at 1st asking having hit the track weekly from at least the 6th of September........nice drill 1st time on the Dmr surface following many works put in at Slr hint that he appreciates the synthetic surface

2  Takeit Tothe Limit   dangerous mostly because he appears loose here.......in fact I would have selected him higher if he hadn't blown a loose lead in his last on a great day for speed.......blew a loose lead in 3 prior races as well........needs to start living up to his name

4  Litle Bro Garrett

race 2    average clarity

4  War Destiny   impressive set of works at Slr for this Sadler four year old 1st timer.........strong works at 3F - 4F - 5F - 6F......that's very rare and a sign this fellow has speed and can endure

8  Clickjab   best ever in 4 lifetime races was his lone sprint albeit on the grass..........been flattening out routing.......doubt he will sprinting.........away 2 months but blinkers on and a good looking series of works suggesting the equipment change will be a plus........might be up for firing his lifetime best today

2  Tizapalooza   showed life (on the grass) in lone lifetime start which was way back in January........bred fine for the AW and retains Mike Smith................trainer isn't much with 1st time starters but ironically he is good off of extended layoffs..........seems dangerous

1  Couldashouldadid

race 3    average clarity

3  Silver Torch   proven on the green carpet and just fired a strong route AW effort where he had a wide trip on what appeared to be a slight rail bias day.......might have been his best AW effort ever and he seems even better on the sod

2  Synnin   nice layoff win in last......good enough to be a major player here if he takes a logical move forward 2nd out after the layoff

8  Sir Macho   ran well 40 days fresh in his last with a strong drill prior to the race.........43 days off this time and another strong drill for today......all systems go

1  Divine Vision

race 4    average clarity

5  Welcome Home Ryan   handles the distance well........handles the Dmr AW........small drop should help.........and the combo of Bejrano/Mulhall are 3 for 3 over the last couple of months........a superfecta off good stuff

2  Senor Rain   declining runner was just claimed by Peter Miller.......get out time as he claimed his new fellow for $20K and drops to $12.5K.....not a very positive sign of good health but Miller has won 6 of his last 14 dropping 1st out following a claim

8  Woodman's Luck   nice winning forward move with the blinkers put on in latest.........and the small step signals his form has held......last shot ever to run on the soon to be defunct Del Mar synthetic where he has preformed well

1  Friendly Banter &  4  Shun (tied for 4th selection)

race 5    average clarity

9  Margo Machance   all 9 grass races run the last two years in the USA and France for this filly are a good fit versus today's competition.......and her trainer Leonard Powell is often at his most dangerous sprint to route which is the case today

3  Baruta   race lacks speed and this mare has tactical speed.........seems highly likely to get a ground saving trip up near or on a predictably reasonable or slow pace........sharp a.m. preparation........very consistent at the one mile turf distance (4 1 2 1)

4  As Rulers Go   Neil Drysdale is often at his most dangerous 3rd out after a layoff which is the casehere with this three year old filly.......seems like a good spot for a turf sprinter to attempt a turf route for the 1st time.......might get good position close to a reasonable pace

11  Charlie's Angel

Long-shot consideration:   8  Jade with Envy   pops when she is able to run back in 3 or 4 weeks rest..........4 weeks rest today......and one mile appears to be her best turf distance

race 6    average clarity

4  Uzziel   3 for 3 lifetime when she has been able to get a loose lead........and I rate it about 70/30 she will be loose here........trainers hot..........recent works have never been better

9  Mienhertzhageni   best on the Del Mar AW so with the surface soon to be no longer after Sunday you would think that the connections will pull out all stops for their filly to run her best.......and..........her best is highly competitive here

2  Kool Kat   turf fit.......1 for 1 on the Dmr synthetic and the win came turf to AW which is also today's scenario......1st at 7 furlongs but her running lines suggest the extended sprint distance will be a good fit

8  Kathleen Rose

race 7    average clarity

8  Tom's Tribute   very consistent grass runner especially when today's rider Mike Smith has been aboard.......four year old gelding has tactical speed for the Hall of Fame rider to work with and overcome the 8 post......2 for 2 on the new Dmr grass course and those two races were run at the Grade 1 and Grade 2 level.......yikes

2  Za Approval   best on very firm turf (nearly beat the mighty Wise Dan in the 2013 B C Mile Turf at SA)........welcome back to sunny California where it is more likely for the ground to shake on a given day than get rain.........Chrisopher Clement is at his very best when he ships......and Belmont to Del Mar is one long journey

9  Avanzare   rider and the trainer are both somewhat cold but over the years have made for one tough team.......so.......together they might jump start things here with this consistent four year old gelding who owns tactical early speed to aid his chances of getting on over by turn one

6  Kaigun

race 8    average clarity

3  Jet Trick   2 of his 3 races at Dmr are strong versus today's bunch......last is somewhat hidden in that this two year old was 3 wide and mid pack on a slightly rail biased speed day

2  Captain Carchy   both lifetime sprints are better efforts than appear in print........improved work since his latest........and Mike Puype runners are firing on all cylinders of late

10  Increase   solid wake up in latest his 1st versus maiden claimers.........would have selected higher if I wasn't a bit leery of another drop and the fact this is a sprint.........so far in 4 lifetime starts he has only routed.......but........ he will be tough if he has remained in relatively good health and can make the transition to sprint racing

9  Always Never

6  Original Rex
