Santa Anita for Friday 13 February 2015

Not an easy card to decipher in quite a few of the races. Let's call it a 4 on the 1 to 10 scale.

race 1    below average clarity

5  Empowering Force   seems likely to sit in an outside stalk position which has been a good place to be for the most part the last couple of weeks but not yesterday (one day does not make a trend)......hot rider/trainer combo in Valdez/Palma

3  Tiz Jolie   lone win came the only time this gelding was up for a tag..........available for $25K today.......sharp improved recent a.m. work........likes to run awfully wide but how wide can you be in a five horse field.......believe this youngster is well meant today

4  Litigation Road   all four lifetime races with the blinkers off fit decently here.......consistently closes well from off the pace in routes........little traffic to cope with in such a small route field is a big plus

 

race 2    average clarity

4  Grammy Times Six   both lifetime races sprinting at SA with the blinkers on are very good and his last run way back in May is hidden by a very bad trip and in a fast heat.........trainer is fairly hot right now and good with prolonged layoff runners.......I am a bit concerned that this filly was a vet scratch on 23 Jan 15 up for $20K........might be a good sign of decent health in that she is now up for $25K

3  Quay Factor   away since June but this filly won her mc debut and did so in decent time that would likely handle these.......so that seemingly makes her dangerous fresh off of the bench for Miller and company

1  Nature's Alley   nice winning forward move in last which was her 2nd lifetime start.......fits fine if her development continues today on Friday the 13th

 

race 3    average clarity

5  Powerful Girl   better than par efforts (adjusted for trip) in last three races.......believe 7F is a little further than she wants to travel but still should be OK here versus a soft bunch of foes

7  Twinkle Toes   much needed drop out of MSW racing to mc30K........only dirt race is decent considering today's lower level.......and today we get a major league rider upgrade.......Kathy Walsh doesn't start many these days but she still wins her fair share 

8  Coded Message   decent mc debut last..........broke slow from the metal monster and then showed life after that.......better start and a small logical forward move and she will be a major factor here

4  City Beach

 

race 4    below average clarity

3  Catch a Flight   decent 1st ever in the good old U S of A in last especially considering it was off a long layoff......solid drills since and Stevens smartly sticks with the R Mandella runner........owns some solid races in Brazil that would surely beat these........seems tough if he makes a logical forward move 2nd out after the long break

5  Motown Men   very dangerous speed invader from GG..........especially if the track is a little kinder to speed than it has been the last couple of weeks.......but speed was decent yesterday

4  Sammy Mandeville   1st ever on the dirt in last and the effort wasn't bad.........rider upgrade and blinkers on for today.......might provide the impetus for a forward move today......fits if it does

race 5   average clarity

1  McHeat    7 grass winners tossed by mom........that tells me the sprint dirt debut was a tune-up and not a bad one at that.......full throttle go today on the grass where she likely has been pointed

4  Air Nashoba   poor trips in both lifetime races which were on the sod.......new jock today and that jock has been riding well for the trainer the last couple of months.........never sharper in the a.m........stout here if Espinoza gets this filly to settle down 

9  Temple Keys   rider upgrade ........cut back of one turf furlong a plus.........owns some speed in a race lacking it......dangerous especially since Tom Proctor has awoken for the doldrums

5  P Club

 

race 6    above average clarity

6  Persuasive Paul   making a living in these starter alw races......and the competition here is much softer than he has been facing and beating

2  Image of Joplin   can upset here if he brings his very best.....recent a.m. work hints that he might.......and his trainer Matt Chew has been hot the last couple of weeks

1  Muchos Besos   blinkers off seems to have turned this gelding around.....snatched the lead in his latest and did in from the same post as he has today........and speed did well yesterday

7  Carlot Cowboy

 

race 7    average clarity

(NOTE:  13 AE Mobilized  has a shot if draws into the race)

2  Eddie's First   blinkers on today and assuming that he has been working with them on he sure has woken up a ton.........owns a race on the hill run last May that would crush these........and I think he might be up to that race or at least close to it

8  Bernster   handled a three year layoff with a win in last so 2 months off should be a piece of cake.......bred to take to the sod......trainer and rider are starting to heat things up

5  Guggenheim   good looking win in his 1st on the turf and it was down the hill.......needs more today most likely but might be up to it considering how easy he made the win look in late stretch

10  Incline Village

 

race 8    below average clarity

10  Ritzy Tags   woke up in last........cut back of 1/2 furlong seems like a plus.........training as if this Bob Baffert maiden claimer has held form

7  Oleanderpolarbear   wide up on the pace and logically tired late in her maiden debut............work tab since hints she has improved......as good a shot as anyone if she has and of course gets a better trip

9  Kelbaker   decent drills..........decent pedigree.........and Tim Yakteen is decent with mc 1st timers.........dangerous sort
