Del Mar for Friday 12 August 2016

Saturday's Del Mar selections will be posted by no later than 7:30 Pacific time as to accommodate those who need to leave the house early to catch the early races at Arlington Park.

Not an easy card to keep the ball rolling in what so far has been a nice week.

race 1    average clarity

4  Yavrig    very strong race quite a bit better than par in 2nd lifetime start........so........2nd out following the layoff seems like a strong positive........and the cut back in distance from a route to a sprint should help her endurance when push comes to shove

5  Correlation   very suspicious drop following a horrid trip 1st on the grass running a 4 3/4 length 4th despite about 6L of trip trouble.....still this filly has had 75 days to recover and does draw Prat.......dangerous but suspect

1  Mother Flower   one race fits and it is her lone sprint race without wearing blinkers and the debut effort is better than appears in print

4  Ciao Bella Rosa    acted up at the gate in her MSW and did not have the best of trips in the same version of today's race run on 29 July......still was very competitive running a 3 3/4 lengths beaten 3rd.......improved work since hinting the sod muscled her up.....likely moves forward and if she does with better behavior prior to the start and a better trip.....she should..... be tough as nails today

5  Upfront   R Mandella MSW 1st timer was a very expensive purchase ($800K) and is impeccably bred to handle the lawn......and thru the years Mandella is often meant and ready with his 1sters that cost the big bucks

1  Adorable   two 2nd place finishes in two lifetime dirt races.....owns some early speed and has a decent turf pedigree......if he takes to it look for him to go after the lead.......Baffert/Bejarano are on fire winning 41% of their last 31 over the last two months as a team

7  Hadfunlastnight   appears to prefer route racing these days and he sure is training impressively since the Carava claim......what we want is his effort 3 back.......can be in the mix from the get go 

1  Dive Down   sky-high win percentage trainer John Martin is no different 1st out following a claim......way too wide of a journey in his latest........jock upgrade today

4  A Colt Following   very dangerous trainer with laid up horses that drop in claiming and especially so when they show a strong series of works.......believe Miller has this follow ready fresh off of the bench

2  Tiz Jolie

10  Alexita   best ever in S Cal was at Dmr one year ago and at today's 6 1/2F distance......and her latest also at Dmr is solid......drop is a little suspicious but makes some sense as Knapp only paid 4.5K more than she up for today

1  Shakeitupbetty   another drop that is quite suspicious but then again so was the significant rise in class following the April claim.....like our top selection she will be a handful for her competition if she has remained in decent health

9  Smooth Talker   compromised 1st out following the Pender claim hopping at th start and running wide.......new rider gets a shot but I can't call it a rider upgrade by any means.......mare does like the Dmr dirt surface including 6 1/2F......Pender is doing better at the Dmr meeting than his record indicates

4  Sparkling Peg

7  Gio's Lady   acted up at the gate in her MSW in the 23rd July version of this race......broke poorly and then ran a little wide.....actually did fairly well to only get beat by 6L at the wire......should learn from the experience......Gonzo will be out to make amends and hopefully her trainer will get her to behave better

3  Go Argento   last 3 works hint this two-year old filly is "a go" in her MSW debut as does the fact Callaghan is using a top jock on his 1st timer......Espinoza was in a slump for a while but he sure isn't now as he is riding well on all surfaces and his Dmr record shows it (35 10 5 5)

4  Tammy's Window   nice forward move in latest and the effort is hidden by running wide on a somewhat rial biased day....like the sprint-sprint-route scenario for a two-year old.......turf pedigree seems OK....so does Bejarano in the saddle

5  Blame It On Alphie

5  Touching Rainbows   decent layoff win and in the race he displayed some solid route speed.......and the works since suggests he benefited greatly from his 1st at a route and will make a necessary move forward today at a more difficult level

7  Radio Silent   very consistent since the blinkers were added 5 races back and especially at today's one mile distance......last is OK and he is likely to show more 2nd out following the 3 1/2 month layoff

2  Spitfire   brutal pace up front totally set the race up for this Ellis runner who wisely sat dead last for 1/2 the race......but .......it was his 1st race in 4 months so like our 2nd selection he has the right to move forward....and fits if he does

8  Knight of Drama

4  Holy Lute   won this race last year and could be 3 for 3 at 5F on the grass at Del Mar with a little better racing luck....reunites with Gonzo who was aboard for last year's version of this race

7  Rocket Heat   back to S Cal following 2 poor races out East........loves the Del Mar turf and the abbreviated 5 furlong races......full throttle from the get go and with Bejarano up......needs to rebound but I'd say it is 60/40 that he does

2  No Silent   can really fly late in these 5F grass races and seems at his very best on the Del Mar turf........should go off a decent price

1  Hunt

3  Highly Acclaimed   new sire Acclamation was one heck of a racehorse even better than his overall record would indicate and his first horse he has sired is training extremely well finishing off his work regiment with a 58:2 Hg at Dmr.....and mom has tossed 7 winners from 7 starters..........appears to be very talented

9  Close to Midnight   bet hard in MSW debut but only ran so so....but.......blinkers off today and improved a.m. work....definitely deserves another shot especially if our top selection doesn't fire the effort I think he will

7  If Ur Not Early   works are decent (but by no means eye-popping) but Prat accepts the mount in the nightcap (and he still has a plane to catch to be at Arlington tomorrow).....and mom sure has been prolific was 8 winners from 8 starters including 2 Stakes winners
