Santa Anita for Sunday 22 October 2017

Plenty of wide open races today. Let's hope we hit a few of them. Less than 2 weeks to the Breeders Cup at Del Mar.

race 1    below average clarity

3  Chief Hosa   two of three races on the hill without the blinkers on look good in this spot both in pace and final time.......sharp recent series of 3 works....leading jock takes over......should be a major player

1  Irish Goodbye   five-year old showed that he appreciates the hill in 2 races on it in Spring.....then the connections abandoned it......finally back to the hill .......and........he is getting to run on it off of short rest which he appears to respond to......dangerous sort

4  Fly to Mars   needed a break following 5 races in 1 1/2 months to start career and Miller wisely gave this three-year one.......now following a layoff off run he is back in short rest which he handles.....1st on the grass but he owns a pedigree that should take to it

8   Awesome Heights

5  Edwards Going Left   all of his strong efforts (and a couple that are much better than appear in print) are run off of short rest and that is the case today.......2 for 2 racing in allowance races.......shot to make it 3 for 3 this afternoon

2  Hot Sean   three-year old colt has done little wrong in 4 lifetime endeavors in the afternoon and Baffert has him working as if he is likely to fire a 5th today to add to his ( 4 2 2 0) record

1  Mesa Sky   gelding won off of a 11 month layoff last year and he is attempting to do the same this year off of a 12 Month hiatus.......prolonged work tab suggests Peter Miller has him at a peak.......a solid effort/fig like last year's layoff run appears to be in the cards

 

race 3    average clarity

4  Just a Smidge   very promising MSW winning debut but followed that up with two dull races.....Baffert shakes things up by yanking off the blinkers and gives his filly some class relief......Baffert is 30% win in non Graded Stakes races like this one

3  Artistic Diva   expensive purchase was pounded at the windows in her MSW debut and did not disappoint.......she has been away since that 24 Aug race put has put in plenty of work in the meantime.....seemed poised to show even more today in her 2nd out and if she does she has a good shot at making it 2 for 2 to start her career

1  Chatty   nice forward move to graduate in her last which was her 2nd lifetime start......she has always trained well at SA and finally gets to run in the afternoon on it.....not out of the win picture in this spot by any means

 

race 4    average clarity

2  Allaboutmike   2 for 2 at SA on the grass albeit in turf sprints......lone route which was run in July at Dmr is way better than appears in print.....dueled in nasty pace and did so during a week (and especially the day of his race) when speed was poison going "long" on the grass......Maldonado is up and he won those two sprint races on the grass at SA

1  Ritzy A. P.   last two races for this colt are solid but both were at 9F which likely suites him better.......8F might be a little short but maybe not with today's rider and a good post.......Pratt is amazingly only 8 % win at the meeting but he does have the highest in the money percentage of all riders with at least 25 starts

7  Kencumin   good work regiment prior to his latest which fits well here.......not much a.m. preparation this time around is not very reassuring......but maybe he didn't need it coming off of a 9F turf race.....we shall see

3  Hootie

Long-shot consideration:   8  Swinging Star   sprint- sprint - scenario today for his 3rd out following a layoff.........only two grass routes are better than appear in print as Mike Smith gave poor rides in both........not an easy post but the right guy up in Nakatani to negotiate a good trip

 

race 5    below average clarity

6  Hailey Rachele   every other sort and she appears to be on the positive end of the pedulum......not exactly a top rider or trainer but this proven mare seemingly has a soft group of foes to cope with

5  Mikenjane   very solid works last Spring but then something went amiss as there is a gap in her training from June to Sept......she does seem to be sharpening but does she have enough put in to be fully fit......if she does she might fit awfully well in this weak looking field

7   Biscotti Gal   latest work hints she might be sharpening when it counts the most as in right before her MSW debut......and as stated above if she does she might fit awfully well in the weak looking field

2  In Heat

 

race 6    average clarity

1  Ciao Bella Rosa   night and day better racing at today's one mile turf distance and especially on firm rated turf ( 4 0 2 2).....does tend to hang some so 2nd might but in the cards as much as 1st

5  Arrowsphere   speed is her game and she might be tough to wheel in with the meet leading bug boy up who is starting to fix his Achilles Heel which has been turf routes.....and then there is the ever significant drop down from MSW to maiden claiming

2  Fast Bid   needs a rebound of sorts and the fact he is able to race off of a decent 5F work put in only 3 days ago hints he is about to provide one....dangerous sort

9  Miz Tianjin

 

race 7    below average clarity

3  Street Vision   layoff/drop/sprint - all right up Mark Glatt's alley.....that and it appears to be a good sign that Baze is back aboard as the two times he has ridden this gelding he got plenty out of him

7  Logan's Moon   seven-year old is running off of his 1st break in 2017..........and the 7 weeks off appears to have reinvigorated him for Hollendorfer and friends as his a.m. work has been impressive

1  Papa Turf   solid improvement 1st out following the claim in latest.....and Keith Desormeaux must like what he sees to have raised him up in claiming two levels.....and the trainer has a good history getting back to back wins out of a horse

4  Magic Taste

 

race 8    average clarity

8  Lovely Anzi   strong improvement 1st out with Baltas as the trainer in his last ........and since his graduating win he has trained as if Baltas might have him even better.....if that is true he.....will....be.....tough

7  The Big Train   last race is awfully strong and somewhat disguised......new trainer (an upgrade for sure) and a very dangerous one in Peter Miller for today......that makes for some upside potential

6  Popular Kid   seems very sharp right now and if he can transfer his dirt effort in his last over the turf today he might be rated too low....dangerous potential and with a rider who has his mojo back in Elliot

3  Spiritual Warrior

Long-shot consideration:   5  Plain Wrap   last time this price shot raced at one mile on the SA sod he fired an effort that is significantly better than appears in print....mostly because of the nasty pace he coped with.......just popped his lifetime best on the dirt....might be better on the grass.....works are good.....bombs away would be sweet

 

race 9    average clarity

11  Spend It   lifetime best and strong fit here is his lone race at today's distance and the race was at SA.......decent works and racing as a 1st time gelding.....should have endurance coming off a route......likely will go off a handsome price

3  Southern Thunder   2nd out with Mullins as the trainer and 1st time blinkers which I like considering decent speed rider Pedroza is up.....race lacks speed so if the blinkers help this guy focus he might be in the mix from the get go

6  Orejas   solid better than par effort 1st out following the Baltas claim....and like our top choice this guy's lifetime best was run at 7F.......very dangerous sort
