Santa Anita for Thursday 5 April 2018

TAKE NOTE that there will not be any selections available for Sunday 8 April (see our calendar information) for Santa Anita. Basically it is R & R time to recharge my aging batteries.

race 1    average clarity

1  Kochess   vastly improved since high % trainer Wong claimed 3 races back.....earned a "real" number on the dirt at the 8K level in his latest which is still 2 or 3 lengths better than par for today 25K level.......that and he has shown in the past that he can handle the hill

5  Coastline   seven-year old has gobbled up a lot of cash over the years but at the 25K level he fits awfully well when competing down the SA hill grass course.......that and Desormeaux is up for the 1st time

2  Banze No Oeste   take note when Knapp runs a given horse 2nd out following a claim......that is the case today for this gelding who is rather consistent when running down the SA hill grass course

race 2    above average clarity

2  Yalla   nice awakening for this filly since trainer Alfredo Marquez saw fit to put the blinkers on two race back.........that and she has caught one soft looking group of foes

7  Veiled Heat   seems best at today's abbreviated dirt distance of 5 1/2 furlongs........10 lbs bug boy is aboard for the 1st time.......might really fly early.....kid could use a win in a sprint as he is only 1 for 21 in sprints (2 for 14 in routes)

6  Radio Chatter   mare has run only one race that fits well here.......the race run 3 back and was the only time she was able to get the lead.......she might get it here......call it about a 1 in 3 chance

3  I'll Wrap It Up   trainer has snapped out of a small slump........seven year old gelding runs 2nd out following a long break and drops a level.......that and his best consistency by far is when he competes at today's 1 1/16 distance.......hard not to like

4  Roaring Rule  N Cal conditioner is only (5 0 2 0) at the SA meeting but high percentage trainer John Martin is usually much more dangerous than that when shipping from up north

5  Shackleford Banks   deep closer should have little traffic to cope with in this small field when in starts to roll late........away since October but Hollendorfer drops him multiple levels which hints this is not a tune-up or he would have placed him at a higher protected level

4  Tina Tina   both of her lifetime dirt races fit fine here and both were at SA.....and she showed that she will run on or off of the lead with success.....and trainer Richie Baltas is rather hot

5  Mixed Emotions   nice forward move in 2nd lifetime start and another might be in the cards as this Eric Kruljac filly just worked a very strong 5F work.......and you have to like that V Espinoza stays up and stays up for his only mount of the day

1  Donut Girl   Hector Palma might have stolen one here by way of the claiming box as this filly won at 1st asking........likely needs a small move forward and her solid 4F drill on March 28th suggests that she will provide one

7  Gia Lula   Glatt is good off of layoffs........and Glatt is also solid dropping from MSW racing to maiden claiming.......and the best effort of this youngster's career and a strong fit here is her lone lifetime grass race........that race was run at one mile but my guess is she will handle the hill just fine

1  California Breeze   another dropping from MSW to MC.......and the D'A like Glatt is quite dangerous with the maneuver.........filly ran two 3rd's in two MSW races down the hill.......that bodes well for her drop down today

3  Foxtail   ran OK in her lone lifetime race which was in the 4 Feb. version of this race.......she has always trained awfully well especially for a maiden claimer.......maybe she will brings that a.m. prowess to the p.m. today

2  Tiz Deliteful   races seem to set-up some for those capable of running off of the pace and that is the case for this four-year old filly.......good forward move for this young lady in her latest........and the best drill she has shown in quite a while since......believe she will move forward again......if she does she should be motoring fast in the late stages

3  Where's the D   best take note of this rider/trainer combo......E Hernandez/R Trela have won five of their last six as a team and with the other hitting the board......wow.........five year old mare won at a route in her last and seems better suited to a sprint.....dangerous sort

7  Rockantharos   by far at her most dangerous racing at today's 5 1/2 furlong distance.........so the cut back in distance should be a plus......that and she owns a decent history racing off of short rest........21 days since her latest qualifies for that

2  My Aunt Tillie  nicely improved since Puype put the blinkers on his mare 5 races back......and.......not surprisingly she just fired her lifetime best with the switch to top turf jock Corey Nakatani......stays up today and once again with a good post to work with

1  Speakers   toss out her last run off of a 7 week break as it appeared to be a total gimme.....runs much better off of short rest and that is the case today......retains another solid grass rider in Van Dyke

4  Lostintranzlation   won the 21 Jan version of this race but still qualifies for today's alw condition as she won the race as a maiden.........likes ample time between starts and gets it today......works are very good........not out of the win picture by any means

7  Flynn   very strong a.m. work for this Steven Miyadi first time starter as he seldom pushes them hard in the a.m.....but.......lookout when he does.......that and mom has tossed two winners from two starters

4  Leroy   good history for Philip Oveido with 1st time starters as in 2 for his last 7 with 2 others in the money......mom has tossed 3 winners from 3 starters and one was a Stakes winner........very solid work tab both at Tup and then SA

6  Poco Diablo   yet another 1st timer that appears ready to rock and roll at 1st asking........Mike Harrington has put endurance and speed into this four-year old 1ster.....hinting he is well-meant in his debut run into the wonderful world that is thoroughbred racing
