Del Mar for Sunday 19 August 2018
OK card to finish a wonderful weekend of racing. Take note that there is a SHF carryover in race 10.
Best of luck as always!
race 1Â Â average clarity
1 Beantown Boys  very good history at the distance (6 2 3 1) and plenty of weight off and with a solid high win % apprentice rider up.....trainer is 0 for 5 at the meeting but has a chance to put one in the win column here
4 Mercer Island  claimed way back in May but he is training as if he is ready fresh for his new trainer Glatt who is rather tough off of layoff albeit more so with sprinters
5 Avanti Bello seems to be making a rebound of sorts this summer and if the positive trend continues he is likely rated too low
race 2Â Â average clarity
7 Gray Gem  very competitive in four lifetime starts all of which were on the AW at GG.......away since April but he won his debut so he is "proven fresh".......1st on conventional dirt but his bullet 5F work put in at Dmr hints that might be a very good thing
2 Candy Crew  very impressive early speed but he has to cope with others in here that also fly early........basically he appears to be the best of the speed horses in this affair
1 Heartfullofstars  seems like a good spot for a late runner which he happens to be......one of the D'A's better stats is 1st time he runs a given horse in a claiming race......and that is saying something as statistically speaking he is solid in many areas
6Â Neighborhood Bully
race 3Â Â average clarity
3 Dominating Woman  2 for 2 on the grass (and at Dmr) and in both of the efforts her early speed was impressive......and this race sure appears to set for those up close early.....away since Feb but the trainer is hot and a.m. works say ready........and I sure like that Tyler Gaffalione gets the call as he is one nice (and I think underrated) grass rider
1 Helen Hillary  very strong turf runner is not easy to make as a 2nd selection instead of a top selection.......that is for sure.......but the race shape might hurt her some and whereas our top pick is 2 for 2 at Del Mar she is unproven on the course as this is her 1st run over it
6 Quebec  four-year old filly might get a nice stalk position and for trainer and a rider who at the moment are rather hot.......not out of the win picture (pun intended) by any means
2Â Miss Sugars
7Â A Little Bit Me
race 4Â Â average clarity
2 Surfing Star  both lifetime endeavors are quite a bit better than par for today's nw alw level.......and his work regiment strongly suggests he is returning off of the 5 1/2 month layoff as good as new
4 King Abner  one for one at Del Mar.......trainer is starting to really heats things up......and it appears the grass race in his last really muscled him up as his drill since the 29 July race is the best he has shown in a long time
5 Triple Shot  colt is on the right end of the learning curve and seemingly very deserving of this opportunity to race in an allowance race at Del Mar
3Â Terrible Ted
race 5Â Â below average clarity
11 Second Fiddle  Mullins is hot and sends out a 1st time starter who was just purchased in April and hasn't missed a beat since in the a.m......mom has tossed 6 winners from 6 starters with 3 Stakes winners.......very solid turf breeding........doubt she will be her ML 20 to 1 if she is "live"
3 Orageuse  two nice sprint grass races in two lifetime starts......away since Oct but training well enough to be ready fresh.........Martin Garcia seems to only have about one mount a day but he is making the most of his limited opportunities
6 Colonel Power  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  very solid move forward in her 2nd lifetime start.....1st on the sod but her pedigree to handle it is solid as mom has tossed three grass winners from five starters.......should be prominent from the get go with a struggling but hungry speed rider in Pedroza up
12Â Tantara
8Â She Be Striking
race 6Â Â average clarity
3 Allaboutaction  very consistent competing on conventional dirt (9 4 3 1 1) and his last two races run at 6F are very strong here.......that and his trainer Peter Miller can do no wrong of late
7 Best Two Minutes scratched out a cheaper race yesterday for this race....and it is uncanny how well horses do in S Cal when they elect to re-enter for a race a day or two later
1 Boy Howdy  trainer is ice-cold but be careful here as he has put some tightly spaced (mostly 4 days) interval training into this fellow who loves today's 6F distance......as in 2 wins and 2 2nd's in 4 6F races
2Â Aristocratic
race 7Â Â average clarity
5 Paprika  consistent sort owns 3 2nd in 3 lifetime starts......and her only dirt endeavor is her best race and the strength of the effort is disguised by a bad trip......and stout former S Cal rider Rosario is up
8 Coco Kisses  poor trip hides a strong 1st ever at Del Mar......two reassuring works since......trainer could use a win and seemingly has a shot at the winner's circle here
4 Smiling Annie  works seem dangerous for this Glatt filly 1st time starter.....and Stevens might have gotten off of our top choice to ride this filly.......if so she seems even more dangerous
1Â Desired Edge
3Â Minister'smistress
race 8Â Â average clarity
1 Catapult  nicely improved since Sadler took over the training duties from Chad Brown and that is no easy task.......lifetime best in last and seems up for similar or even better as he just worked an impressive bullet 5F work with the dogs up on turf in 100:1H......nice post.....nice grass rider
6 Bowies Hero  colt loves the one mile turf distance as in 6 for 10...... and...... he just ran awfully well at 9F on the turf which he usual struggles with some........good post and one nice rider in Rosario who won 4 yesterday
8 B Squared  blinkers on in latest really moved this colt forward.....that and the cut back in distance should be a plus.....as is 5 lbs off.......should get ignored at the windows.....sure hope so
4Â Sharp Samurai
9Â Fly to Mars
race 9Â Â average clarity
5 Policy  very reliable trainer when he shows good works.......and this two-year old colt MSW 1st starter is definitely working well for a Cal-bred baby........and mom has tossed a Stakes winner from only one starter to date
7 Feeling Strong  trainer appears to be waking up and he has this laid up 3rd time starter working well and gets Desormeaux to accept the mount......and like Hector Palma Kent is snapping out of a dull period
8 Half Past Time  works are dangerous looking for this Glatt 1st timer......numerous and with some drills of merit.....might be worth his ML or slightly lower
3Â Tribal War Chant
4Â Anniversary Sale
race 10Â Â average clarity (SHF carryover here)
1 Ohio  appears as if it wasn't a good claim with the drop of two claiming levels....... but...... 10 weeks off to recover and some sharp a.m. work.......and he draws Van Dyke......so I obviously I believe his health is good enough to handle the lower level
3 Secreto Primero  good history on the Del Mar turf and he is racing at his favorite turf distance......like the step up of one level after the win as supports the fact he has remained in good form
5 Dano's Dream  last sure appears to be a tune-up off of the layoff......rider upgrade for today......cut back in turf distance appears to be a plus.....trainer's stock has run better than his 2018 record at Del Mar suggests
9Â Tiz a Billy
10Â Cimpl Man
6Â Offshore
