Del Mar for Friday 24 August 2018
After quite a few days in a row where the dirt surface was "even" it was not even yesterday. The inside was dead and very costly to anyone who spent too much time near the rail. So I leaned on it being an outside dirt track to some degree in my selections.
Best of luck as always!
race 1Â Â below average clarityÂ
1 London Hotel  no action on the board whatsoever for this Ron Ellis 1st starter hints this girl's MSW debut in a one mile turf route was a muscle her up endurance building run.......and her a.m. prowess since sure supports the notion......and maybe more importantly she takes that significant move from MSW racing to MC
7 What's Briun  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE if this filly is up for her race run 3 back on 22 April she should have been top pick and with a rating "above average clarity".......Glatt is usually ready fresh off of the bench but if this three-year old was given a gimme on 4 August........lookout
3 Take Charge Gal  works hint that this laid up since November 2017 filly is returning to the race wars as a better horse.......the fact Van Dyke sticks with her supports the notion
8Â Waze Ready
2Â One Upper
race 2Â Â average clarity
3 Okinawa  very consistent in turf sprints which includes her last run 3 weeks ago at Del Mar......red hot rider and a trainer that is heating things up.......and a turf bullet work preparing for today's race......hard not to like
7 Painting Corners  blinkers go on for the first time for this filly ........and ........yesterday Peter Miller put the blinkers on one of his runners and she won impressively in a 5F sprint........that and Miller is often at his best with the sprint-route-sprint scenario and that is the case here
2 Swirling  four-year old filly could be 3 for 3 lifetime if not for losing many lengths to a bad trip in her latest where she was still able to put in a good stretch run........she has shown she can run fresh.......10 months "fresh" today...........dangerous sort
4Â Spin Me a Kiss
1Â Snow Cloud
race 3Â Â average clarity
7 Kershaw  might be an awfully good claim by D'Amato and company as this three-year old gelding won by 13 lengths in last to graduate.......3 reassuring works since ........should be the one to beat
5 Captivate  last two races fit well at today's level and the hottest jock around in Van Dyke sticks with the four-year old of Mike Puype's.........should be one of the major players
2 Saratoga Morning  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  good race two back run turf to dirt and the strength of the effort is hidden some.......turf in last - dirt today.....it's not rocket science
4Â Pocket Personality
8Â Goodwillambassador
race 4Â Â below average clarity
6 Buck Duane  trainer Miyadi is deadly with multiple level drops like this MC50K to MC20K drop.....as in 9 wins with his last 25.......gelding has been off since New Years Day but is training as if he is totally fit and ready
8 Kopitar  both lifetime dirt races fit fine and he might be up for his best dirt run to date 2nd out after a break as his history with short rest is good
7 Duke of Fallbrook  low percentage trainer but he seems to have a good enough handle on this gelding to get a good race out of him 2nd out following 3+ month break.......and if he does this four-year old should fit just fine
3Â Turnaround
2Â Gotnoquit
race 5Â Â average clarity
6 My Man Chuckles  tough trip in last vs. better which was also a 5F turf sprint.......he colud have won that race with a good trip.......faces easier today and back to Prat (who owns this gelding's last 2 wins) after being absent for two races........should be flying late
1 Incensed  believe this five-year old can get loose on the lead and with only 113 lbs to carry with the rather successful bug boy up (and note that this fellow has won without the lead as well)........turf speed did well yesterday at 5F in both races and the rail is in the same 30 ft position today......such a deal
4 Puriano  very impressive/consistent while stepping up in class .......nearly won the 1 August version of this race.......not out of the win picture in this affair by any means
7Â Hitters Park
3Â Salient
race 6Â Â average clarity
7 Spiced Perfection  missed the board in her latest for the 1st time in 9 races on the dirt......needs a rebound.......and it sure appears like the blinkers on for today will provide it.......as her recent bullet 4F work at Del Mar hints the equipment change has worked
2 Vallestina  2 for 2 on the dirt including a win at Dmr.......0 for 2 on the grass.......wisely back to the dirt today for her 2nd out after the layoff.......and also back to the rider who won that Del Mar dirt race in August of 2017
8 Family Girl  will need more than her last but 2nd out after a layoff can move her forward.....and if the track is like yesterday her post (where she can stay wide thru-out) will be a good thing
4Â Love a Honeybadger
6 Tyfosha Â
race 7Â Â average clarity
6 Shenandoah Queen  by far at her best racing at one mile on the dirt..........and........won the 2017 version of this small Stakes race at 20 to 1......Sadler is often at his most dangerous 3rd out following a break.....and that is the scenario for today
4 Way to Versailles  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  WO invader has handled the turf and the AW and her pedigree is also decent to take to the conventional dirt......Prat and Miller at the helm......dangerous sort
7 Vali Dori  could use a rebound of sorts and Baffert gives his six-year-old mare enough time off to mount one.......and........she is likely to get a nice outside stalk position which would be a good thing if the track plays like yesterday
5 Muny Sport  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE
race 8Â Â average clarity
1 Touring Machine  better post......switch to a much more accomplished turf rider.......reliable trainer......our 2nd and 3rd choices beat him in his latest race but he can turn the tables on both off them this afternoon especially considering they both show signs of hanging in the stretch
3 Temple Princess  almost all of her one mile turf endeavors fit very well effort/fig wise but she doesn't seem to have a will to win........but then again Mullins is winning at a very high rate of late as is the jock
6 Himmah  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  both lifetime one mile grass races fit well in this spot......both were run turf sprint to turf route.......can he do similar this afternoon (and not hang) turf route to turf route......we shall see about sunset at Del Mar
7Â Trophy Bridle
