Del Mar for Thursday 30 August 2018
Average to slightly below average race cards for today and Friday handicapping wise and in quality. Saturday's on the other hand looks very good in both categories.
Best of luck as always!
race 1Â Â average clarity
(AE 10Â Sir Eddie has a shot if he draws into the field)
5 Concur  away since Feb but returns as a first time gelding and with just what you want to see as in a strong work tab.......pedigree screams "route" but his running lines and numbers suggest sprint.......5F sprint today and he sure appears "meant and ready"
1 Pitino  lone race was in Nov 2017 and was much stronger than it appears in print with 8L of trip trouble (broke 2 slow - checked 2.5L - ran 3.5 wide = 8 lengths and made for an adjusted for trouble fig that was 3.5L better than par)........seems ready fresh as he was in his debut but turf is a ? mark as his pedigree for the dirt seems better
8 Town Champ  like the switch to the sod as he owns a good pedigree for it (mom has tossed 3 grass winners).....likely needed his last off of the layoff as his a.m. work since is improved.....should be in the mix from the get go
4Â Raging Tiger
6Â Golden Ready
race 2Â Â average clarity
5 Saltarian  best race and hidden by 7 lengths of trip trouble was his lone route race albeit on the grass......but......by my book his pedigree for the dirt is better than the dirt
4 Algorthmnblues  MSW to MC.......2nd time Lasix......2nd time route are all good stats for Eoin Harty.......that and his two-year old filly (facing the boys) should get good up close or on the lead position in a race that doesn't have much speed in it.....low % jock in Conner but he does handle dirt routes fairly well
1 Anvil Rock  might be a good claim by Ian Wilkes of a two-year old who showed plenty of life in his MC debut after a slow beginning at the start of the race......new sire but my guess is he will do just fine as a sire of route runners.......8 furlongs to cover here
7Â The Creep
6Â Lucky General
race 3Â Â below average clarity
4 Lexington Grace  tepid top choice gets the nod mainly because Stevens sticks with the filly for today's somewhat suspicious drop........but a less suspicious with the Hall of Fame rider staying up........that and Ian Kruljac does well with limited starters
8 Tinabud  very consistent sort has been in the exacta 8 of 10 lifetime starts and the two times that she was not she had bad trips but where she showed plenty of life
9 Cute Knows Cute  Peter Miller trained and that is more than enough to consider her despite running so poorly in her lone lifetime route race.........that and her record when up for a tag is (4 3 1 0)
11Â Tiny Tina
3Â Quinnie
race 4Â Â below average clarity
4 Pleasant d'Oro  needs a better trip from Roman because if he given this colt better rides in his last two mounts on him he could have won either race........hard not seeing him giving a better trip today with the way the race shapes up in his favor......they say the 3rd time's the charm
9 Stonegate  lost twice to our top choice in his last two races but he was only 1/2L behind him two back and in his last he had a brutal time of it running wide and near the pace giving him no shot whatsoever.......works since suggest he has held form........back to Baze who rode him in the aforementioned race 2 back
1 Irish Spirit  nice work tab since his useful debut on 30 June.......1st time long today and for a pedigree that says the longer the better........Michael McCarthy has been rather hot.......low % jock in Conner but he does handle dirt routes fairly well
3Â Aggressivity
6Â Caribbean
race 5Â Â average clarity
4Â Marjorie EÂ Â 2 for 2 since going on Lasix.........not sure what the catalyst was for the vast improvement in this Gallagher filly who vaulted forward fig wise in her latest......two reassuring works since the effort.....repeat of her last is stout here with a decent trip and if she builds on the effort she would have a shot at winning with some trip trouble during the race
2 Streak of Luck  very consistent since the blinkers were put on and she is (2 1 1 0) on the Del Mar turf........rather interesting that Smith is riding for Chew.......Mike should be able to sit close and save ground thru turn one with a good post and a filly who has some tactical speed
9 So Golden  ice-cold trainer in James Cassidy but he sure got this six-year-old mare ready off a two month layoff in her last........she nearly won the 2 August version of this race despite veering out at the start from her outer-most post.....two reassuring tightly spaced 5F works since.......seems ready for another good run
3Â Ragazza Di Vola
6Â Music BabeÂ
race 6Â Â average clarity
5 R Cha Cha  1st after the claim by O'Neill is a dangerous proposition for the opposition......cut back in distance should be a plus......works since the claim are very good......four year old gelding should be a major factor in the outcome of this race
3 Mr Cruze  outside of a bad trip which this colt had in his latest (which stopped him from getting another major piece in the purse pie) he has done little wrong.......and his only dirt race in three starts is his best race.....should be in the mix from the get go and with 1st time speed jock Maldonado up
4 Ketos  gets a makeover for today......as in 1st time gelding and the 1st time blinkers......and the changes appear to have worked if his recent a.m. work is any indication
8Â Closing Time
1Â Fender Bender
race 7Â Â above average clarity
2 Tina's Exchange  (7 2 4 1) lifetime on the turf and all of the races were turf sprints......and very game in both lifetime 5F turf races at Del Mar.......recent a.m. work is improved.....believe we might see this guys lifetime best today
5 Eric The Trojan  another consistent turf sprinter who has never missed the board in 6 five furlong turf sprints at Dmr.......that and when Prat rides this gelding he has been especially tough......off pace turf sprinter is fun to watch when he comes flying late......unless of course you bet on a speed horse
3 Mrazek  flashed very impressive speed in latest which was his 1st out in 22 months......and now O'Neill puts the blinkers on him.....might be the speed of the speed with the new equipment......that and he has shown he can run from off of the lead and still win
6Â Blackout
4Â Brandothebartender
race 8Â Â average clarity
7 Conformation  logical drop to the bottom today for this Cecil grass filly because if you can't get the job done at the bottom maiden claiming level for the grass you best run for MC20K on the dirt.......and her pedigree for a dirt route is good
1 Bedford  low percentage trainer overall but Sise is often at his most dangerous 1st time he sends a given horse long........that and the two level drop in MC makes sense......filly should sit close up saving ground for 5 lbs bug boy Espinoza who is at his best in route races as in 22% win
5 Irish Lassie  low percentage lightly used jock in Diego Sanchez has teamed up with trainer Piccioni for one win with four mounts (and two others were in the money) over the last two months........filly just ran her lifetime best and showed decent route speed.....last fits and she might show more 2nd out after 2+ month break
9Â Heloise
4Â Dislitleaglecanfly
10Â Weather Market
