Santa Anita for Sunday 21 April 2019

race 1    average clarity

2  Incredibly Lucky   bet hard in the 31 March version of this race at one furlong less and ran a close par like for the level 2nd.......back in 3 weeks and with a reassuring 4F drill showing......Spawr has had a great meet winning at a 28% clip and one of his main guys in Pereira stays put

6  Smiling Rose   works look awfully good for this George Papaprodromou 1st time starter and the trainer is having a very nice 2019 with a 17% win percentage

4  Vella   MC debut is better than it appears as this filly ran 3 wide on a day there was a slight rail bias........she did well to only get beaten by 4 1/2 for the win.......solid near bullet drill since her debut.......blinkers on........jock sure could use a win

5  Toothless Wonder  likely owns the best early speed in the race and that is somewhat hidden......wide race in his latest (with 1st time blinkers) setting a solid 2nd quarter and still held for a close third.........colt earned an adjusted for pace and position Santucci fig that is 4 1/2 lengths better than par for today's lower level

1  Owning   wide on a good rail day hurt this gelding's chances in his latest.....races 2 & 3 back are both better than par and at run at today's 6F........back to the 25K that Carava took this youngster for......should be a major player

2  I Belong to Becky   best at 6f at SA on a fast track.......gets that today......the last time this three-year old was in a claiming race he won for fun......dangerous sort from the Palma barn

7  Tequila Sunrise   7F to travel should be a plus for this filly and it won't be for many in this 7 horse field........Baltas four year old has been absent since Oct but working like she is very ready........and her whole career fits here

1  Sweetener   lone race with the blinkers on racing on fast dirt fits well here.........that and she has never worked better hinting she is really taking to the now very slow SA dirt

3  Chasing Moments    two decent MSW races way back in 2017 on the synthetic at WO........filly has been laid up since Feb of 2018 but drops and seems to be working well enough to compete at the MC30K level.....would like her chances more if this sprint race wasn't at 7 panels as she shows signs she might flatten out late

2  Lucky Patrick   Polanco might have found the trump card for this six-year-old as not only did his final time fig vault forward but he showed significant speed seemingly out of nowhere.......and it seems wise that Marcelo gave him plenty of time off to recover from the effort with a series of tightly spaced drills

4  Union Rebel   total dirty up him route turf gimme (most likely) in his latest to muscle him up and help out his endurance for a full-blown go today on the dirt at 7F this afternoon

3  Surfside Sunset   dead on the board in his last suggests the barn was just setting things up for today's drop in claiming.....if that is the case expect this five year old to be a player here

 

race 5    average clarity

4  General Mo  broke very poorly in his MSW debut and then showed plenty of life after that.......not much support at the windows for a decently bred Hollendorfer 1st timer so likely needed the race......if that is the case lookout today

1  Runnin'withdadevil   only four-year old in the field and a four-year old who showed good early speed in his MSW debut and now adds blinkers.........he beat 9 of 12 foes in his debut and did it with a wide trip on a day the wood was slightly biased........very dangerous speed in if A. Espinoza can break well from a difficult breaking post at 6 1/2F

2  Loaded Joe   Carla Gaines 1st time starter has a prolonged work tab with many good looking drills hinting this is not a tune-up.......trainer has gotten her act together in 2019 and once again might be a force in the S Cal racing scene

2  Super Patriot   Baffert filly likes to run wide but it might not matter as she drops to lowest claiming level of her life vs. one weak looking group.........all three lifetime wins are with today's rider Van Dyke in the saddle

1  Indypendent Deputy  filly seems better off of short rest and so does trainer Dallas Keen.......last race was only 8 days ago and wasn't too bad considering the softness of this field and the fact it was run at one level higher.........fairly easy to make as our 2nd selection

3  Kennedie Sky   mare is showing signs of improved early speed and she is coming off of a turf sprint.......both might add up to Jockey Delgadillo trying to send this mare after the lead as there is no clear-cut leader in this affair void on any speed

 

race 7    average clarity

2  Baby Ice   seems best at Santa Anita and both races at today's 6F distance since Knapp claimed 4 races back fit well in this spot......away for 8 weeks but the drills suggest she is fit and ready

5  Wishful   decent layoff run at GG on March 10th........jock upgrade to the meets leading rider who is almost always "live" when he rides for Powell.........nice four work series ........hard not to like

4  Miss Lady Ann   filly stepped up a couple of MC levels in her 2nd lifetime start and proved that the move was warranted......steps up again.......nice stalking style.......hot rider & trainer team........filly has upside potential

 

race 8    below average clarity

6  Field Bet   totally toss out her latest as she had a brutal trip......so bad in fact she did awfully well to only be beaten by 5 1/2L in the one mile grass race.........sprint debut two back is decent and she showed good early speed in the race.......claimed back by O'Neill in her latest and that is a sign she might have more talent then a MC50K

8  Shanghai Truffles 50 to 1 in her MSW debut and for a trainer who seldom has them ready for their debut run.........showed plenty of life in her debut following a tardy start.......and she draws Pratt today.......hmm

9  Vangogo   double barrel action for O'Neill as he also trains our top choice........filly has plenty of early speed and gets one hot speed jock in Edwin Maldonado........and blinkers go back on
