Santa Anita for Sunday 23 June 2019

Closing day at Santa Anita and also for The Racing Digest until Wednesday July 17th to charge our batteries and be ready for everyone's favorite meeting which is of course the Summer Del Mar meeting.

Best of luck as always!!

race 1    average clarity

4  Interesting Times   very solid move forward (way better than par for the level) in her 2nd lifetime start and the strength of the fig she earned was supported by a gap of over 6 lengths to 3rd.......1st on the grass is the ? mark as she has a difficult pedigree to figure out for the grass

8  Anonymously  toss out her last two races as she appears to not like the blinkers on today and she cuts back route to sprint.....and she appears better sprinting than routing......she should be in the mix from the get go

2  Miss Flawless  after three unimpressive route races since her USA arrival she finally gets back to a sprint where she did quite well overseas in France.........and look who jumps aboard for the 1st time......Mr Flavien Pratt

9  Portal Creek

6  Queen of the Track

race 2    above average clarity

2  Pas de Panique   one of the better two-year old MSW debuts in S Cal to date and the strength of the effort is disguised to some degree........broke about 2 lengths slow and ran a bit wide up on the pace in a fast run 4 1/2 furlong two-year old race.....solid reassuring 4F drill since......should be a tough

5  We're Still Here   like an old record stuck in a groove I have to comment on what you already know as in Bob Baffert has yet anther 1st time starter working stellar for his MSW two-year old debut

7  Railsplitter   connections got a good look at what they were getting for their $125K as this MSW 1ster was bought at sale in are up to snuff as is Doug O'Neill's ability to get two-year old ready to roll at 1st asking

4  Thanks Mr. Edison

race 3    average clarity

1  Eddie Haskel  5F turf specialist partly because of the fact that he is a good gate horse..........and he owns a nice stalking style.......looks like Kent Desormeaux once again like last time will stalk the leader which should be our 3rd selection and turn on the after burners in the stretch

2  Brandothebartender   small field should keep the traffic down (and decision-making) to a minimum for this late runner just as it did back on 20 Oct 18 where he won a 5F turf $100K Stakes in a five horse field

3  What'sontheagenda  looks loose but he might need an off day for our top selection to hold him off and maybe our 2nd choice too......but then again speed has done well in these abbreviated 5F turf races at SA

race 4    average clarity

8  Golden Star Lady   solid MSW debut for this Hollendorfer two year old filly and she worked further than the distance of this race since.......that hints her endurance is getting better and a move forward should occur this afternoon......Prat wisely sticks with her

10 AE  Amalfi Sunrise   nicely bred filly for Callaghan and company was just purchased in April for $185K so the connections got a good look at what they were getting.....filly does have a tough post if she gets in but she might clear many or all by mid turn as her works hint she has plenty of early gas

1  Go Big Blue Nation  our top choice beat her fairly easily when they faced each other 4 weeks ago......but........Mike Smith wants the mount hinting she might be poised for better.......we shall see at about 2:30 pacific time

3  A Thousand Dreams

7  French Rose

4  Save the Story

race 5    average clarity

2  Sharp Samurai   solid layoff run in her last only beaten 2 1/2L for a G1 win despite a wide trip.......2nd out after the layoff rider in Victor Espinoza up.......seems highly likely do make a very good account of herself

5  Bombard   absent from the turf game for almost 11 months but Baltas appears to have her cranked up and ready fresh off of the bench........gelding likes to stalk the leaders and should get the position here.......and the fact that Prat wants the mount supports the idea that this is not a tune-up

6  River Boyne  loves the SA grass course.......but........Prat is not up as he is going to ride our 2nd pick .........that........and the recent works hint this colt might have slipped a little.......but put the emphasis should be placed on "might have"

3  Snazzy Dresser

race 6    above average clarity

1  Sneaking Out   stands out a ton and one half here and for a trainer in Hollendorfer who is awfully good at getting the most out of talented young fillies like this Cal-bred

2  Don't Sell  turf sprint-turf sprint- dirt route maneuver for this O'Neill filly who might be very muscled up for today's two turn race but who will have to love route racing to have any hope at beating our top selection

3  Violette Sazbo   lifetime best was the only time this filly raced off of a quick turnaround of 22 days.......21 days since her latest.......but like our 2nd choice she better like her 1st ever route endeavor if she hopes to compete with our top pick

race 7    average clarity

6  Still in the Game   good wake-up for this three-year old in his 2nd lifetime start........ran wide in only a five horse field and still managed 2nd earning an adjusted for position Santucci fig that is about par for the MSW level......blinkers off for today and that has been a good move for Ben Cecil as in 3 for his last 7 with the move......5 works since his last to boot

4  Morning Snow   another who just popped a par like effort and in his case it was his MSW debut.......not sure if he will move forward today as he was bet to 6 to 5 in his debut suggesting Baffert had him fully cranked......but even if he doesn't benefit from his debut he still appears to be the controlling speed in the race making him dangerous

7  Gate Speed  debuted on the grass off of some strong works on the dirt........didn't show much in his debut on the grass albeit with a wide trip......gets to run on the surface (dirt) where he has been impressive and likely was the catalyst for him debuting at 4 to 1 in a 9 horse field.........that and he gets Desormeaux today who is 2 for 2 teaming up with Glatt over the last 2 months

5  Rayray

race 8    average clarity

3  Ya Gotta Wanna   two of this fellows best lifetime races were run at 12F and 11F (both Grade 2 races with plenty of talent) where he was still closing at the finish.......if he keeps "grinding away" as far as 14F he has a decent shot of taking down this race

6  Causeforcommotion   mare faces the boys and why not as she has a very good history racing and 11F and 12F where she likes to stalk whoever wants the lead........would have been top choice if she wasn't competing against males at essentially the same weight

8  Oscar Dominquez   Baltas seems to be turning around this gelding who was slipping some......six year old is bred to run all day and that might help him handle the step up in class........that and Prat sticks around

1  Mongolian Groom

2  Ground Attack

race 9    average clarity

7  Der Lu   same owner/trainer/rider who won yesterday's 7th race off of a 9 month layoff with a monster fig as our top suggests this Baffert filly is also ready to roll off of an 8 1/2 month layoff.......and we know she can run fresh as she won her MSW debut in good time in a 6 1/2 furlong race........7F today

6  Donut Girl   brutal trip in last racing wide (in only a 5 horse field) after breaking a step slow and then sent up front for a good portion of the race......cut back of one furlong should be a plus........jock will be out to make amends

1  Bowl of Soul   double barrel action for Baffert as he also trains our top selection......filly went off at 3 to 5 and did not disappoint the chalk players.........but she had a perfect trip stalking a slow pace from the outside on a day the rail was slightly dull......thus 3rd selection

5  Keydetre

race 10    below average clarity

6  Magical Gray  toss out her last as she appears to not want to run as far as 9 furlongs........cut back to 8F on the grass today and her race 2 back at the distance is solid as she was used hard in the 2nd quarter of the race to grab the lead.......she only lost by a nose which was impressive considering in was run off of a 9 week layoff.......3rd out after a layoff today and with a cut back in distance.....solid a.m. work......seems to be poised for a strong race

8  Ameerah B  filly was our top pick in her latest and she was blocked what seems like forever (in actuality about 4L) and she still only lost by a head........blinkers on and two solid works......should be tough

11  Catch the Eye   broke slightly tardy and then ran awfully wide yet still closed fast to run 2nd.......tough post for sure but Garcia is riding great........lookout if he ends up only being 2 wide on turn one

7  Cairo Kiss

1  Miss Bigly

9  Desert Oasis
