Del Mar for Wednesday 17 July 2019

Opening day Del Mar. Life is good!

A special welcome to those of you that only play Del Mar and maybe a few other special days at the other tracks. Great to have you back!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Mr. Magico   five year old has steadily been improving one baby step at a time.....with that in mind I am ignoring his 2 dirt races which were run early in his 17 race career......especially since Powell has two glaring stats as in 27% win turf to dirt with his last 37 and 3 for his last 8 legging up Prat

3  Julius  four year old gelding who likes the front end needs to put away the 2 horse (the only other speed in the race) or take his chances attempting to stalk and succeed for the 1st time in his career

1  I Can Do This   consistent sort and he is (4 1 3 0) in his last four racing endeavors when not up for a tag like today.......seems like the most likely horse to hit the board......but.......he sure likes to hang in the stretch

race 2    average clarity

6  United   ultra impressive 2nd in a Grade 2 at SA where he nearly overcame about 5 lengths of trip trouble.....and his a.m. work in preparation for today's allowance race suggests he is returning as sharp as he was prior to his latest......that and Prat wisely sticks with the Mandella runner

4  Morse Code   six year old responds well to ample time between starts and gets it today.......that and he just popped his lifetime best turf race running for the 1st time on the sod with the blinkers off.....bug boy Velez seems well worth his 7 lbs weight break as he rides extremely well on the grass for an apprentice rider

2  Acker   back to Bejarano who has won his last 4 mounts on this Sadler gelding after being absent for a race.......5 year old has been away for 3 months which is a concern but he sure fits well in this spot if he is fully fit and ready to roll

3  Via Egnatia

race 3    average clarity

7  Monsajem Accrete   trainer Tamayo is good with shippers and I like that he drops a level from 20K to 16K as the competition at Del Mar is as tough as it gets......race shape hints that his off the pace ability fits this affair well

2  Clear the Mind   trainer Bill Spawr is solid in all of the relevant categories that apply to this race but I am a touch leery of the multiple level step up for this six year old gelding

1  Oh Man   seems like the speed of the speed in this one mile affair......but at what cost especially if the inside is a little dead as it so often is on opening day at Del Mar

5  Avanti Bello

race 4    average clarity

1  Puriano   Mark Glatt's gelding is 4 for 6 on main track surfaces and he fired a solid race in his latest (16 June) especially considering he was away from the game since 30 September.......should be tough today if he benefited from his layoff effort

5  Giddymeister   3 for 4 since the blinkers were put on and all were run with Maldonado on his back......easily would have been top pick-a-rue if this race wasn't at Del Mar as he has not hit the board in three racing endeavors on it's main track surface

4  Facts Matter   2 for 2 when Bejarano has been up and he made a nice forward move in his latest which was his 1st out following the Tim McCanna our 2nd selection he has something to prove on the Del Mar dirt where he has failed to hit the board in two starts (albeit one of the races was on an off track)

race 5    average clarity

5  Moreisbetter  three year old filly has done little wrong in 3 lifetime races all of which were at today's 5F distance.......and her latest was her best and disguised by a 3 wide trip up on a solid pace......she did extremely well to run 2nd by a neck......that and I like the change in riders back to Fuentes who rode her well in her 1st two races

3  Flower Point   filly won her MSW debut at SA which was also at 5F on the turf despite a slightly tardy start and a 5 wide trip.....toss out her last at one mile as the saddle slipped.......impressive preparatory work regiment......hard not to like

7  Miss Hot Legs   another promising young filly........strong forward move in her 2nd lifetime start and 1st on Lasix......hasn't missed a beat in the a.m. since her 9 June graduation.......not out of the win picture whatsoever in this spot

4  Honeyfromthesouth

1  Square Peggy

race 6    average clarity

5  I Want One   tightly spaced a.m. work likely has this two year old filly wound up and ready to roll......that and I like that this youngster was just purchased a month ago for $45K and the barn is willing to put her in a MC50K.......trainer puts them where they can succeed as witnessed by his 33% win percentage in 2019

9  Arouse N Go   mom has been most impressive tossing 9 winners from 9 starters and more than half of them graduated at two........that and Bonde has put in 11 works into his two year old filly........another very dangerous 1st time starter

2  Freedom Ride   seems best of those who have raced........and takes the usually meaningful drop from MSW racing to maiden claiming

3  Lucky Daughter  SCRATCHED

6  Golden Goddess

race 7    below average clarity

7  Very Boisterous  Steve Miyadi is doing his Mike Mitchell imitation as in working this two-year old filly with a series of very tightly spaced drills only 5 days apart since 16 June.......wound up like top and ready to rider/trainer combo in Cedillo & Miyadi

3  Smiling Shirlee   sharp works and for a trainer in Bonde who does well with two year old 1st time starters.......that and mom has tossed two winners from two starters and both precociously were able to graduate at two

1  Bella Renella   decent MSW debut 18 days ago at Lrc.....and she appears as if the race muscled her up as she put in an impressive 59 flat work at LA since......and she gets a rider upgrade.......not out of the win picture by any means

9  Liberalism

5  Sassyserb

race 8    average clarity

3  Jasikan   both lifetime U S of A grass races are better than par for today's level (when adjusted for trip) and disguised in their strength by very bad trips.......seems like a ton if Prat (up for the 1st time) can manage a "cleaner" ride on this colt who seemingly has the potential to be a Graded Stakes winner

4  Legends of War   race lacks speed and this O'Neill colt seemingly has the most early gas in the field......and his lone route grass race is better than it appears in print......hard not to like with Bejarano in the saddle

9  Rijeka   good long-shot rider in Fuentes and the trainer Richard Baltas isn't too shabby of a long-shot trainer........three year old seems best "fresh" and he is 2 2/3 months fresh today (2 wins and a G3 2nd in 3 fresh races so far)

8  Gregorian Chant

1  Manhattan Up

race 9    average clarity

4  King Jack  liked this colt prior to his MSW debut and he did not disappoint running an ultra impressive winning race......he ran wide up on a solid set of fractions earning an adjusted for position and pace Santucci fig that is about 4L better than par for today's higher level........Mike Smith remains up for his lone mount on the opening day card

10  Buckys Pick   lifetime best and a solid fit here was run 3 races back turf to dirt in a 6 1/2 furlong affair........turf in last......7F of dirt today.......and the way he finished in his 6 1/2F race hints 7F will be a good distance for him

5  Cats Blame   gelding is a few lengths of ability shy of what our top two picks have produced but he is very consistent when racing off of less than 4 weeks rest......last race was 25 days ago.......6 1/2 furlongs has been a good distance so 7F seems OK.......likely needs lifetime top today and/or poor efforts from our top two picks to get to the circle of joy

9  Metropol

2  Cool Bobby

race 10    below average clarity

5  Satchel Paige   sprint-sprint-route maneuver is a good one for the D'A.........a.m. work is good as is this colt's pedigree to handle the grass.....race two back is much better than appears in print

8  Give Me the Lute   both lifetime 5F grass races are decent and the one two back which is the better of the two is greatly disguised by a bad trip.......first at a route today is a question mark but if he takes to the sod he should get great position on or near the front end

3  Flicflac   rather smooth turf runner gets a jockey upgrade today and with some recent improved a.m. work showing.......believe this three year old colt pops his lifetime best this afternoon

1  Bud Knight

7  Unusually Handsome
