Santa Anita for Friday 4 October 2019
Average looking card today. 10 races on Saturday and 8 on Sunday.
Best of luck as always!
race 1Â Â average clarity
1 Papa Turf  last is better than it looks as he dueled on a slightly dull inside .........appears at his best competing at SA.........drops one claiming level........most likely to lead this race in an affair lacking speed.......hot rider up
6 Royal Seeker  exits a fast heat for the given level at Lrc and returns off of short rest........a ton if he can repeat his latest which I doubt he will because he seems better on the Lrc than he is on the SA dirt......but even if he regresses some because of the track change he still might have a shot
4 Captain N. Barron  2 of his last 4 races fit OK here and that includes his latest......vet scratch on 21 Sept but easy to ignore it as the connections tried to wheel him back in 6 days rest
race 2Â Â average clarity
5 Winning Element  almost all of this gelding's career grass races fit fine here........away since 18 May 18 but his works sure suggest he's fit and ready.........good rider/trainer combo over the last 3 months in Bejarano/O'Neill
8 Buckstopper Kit  good history 1st out following a claim for the D'A and D'Amato is off to a hot start at the Dmr meeting.....that and he and Cedillo have won 3 of their last 5 as a team................lifetime best was run the last time this gelding ran 9F on the grass at SA which was 3 races back and at one claiming level higher
1 Tizzarunner  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE trainer has been in a prolonged slump and needs to "get going" to maintain his hard earned solid reputation.........that might be the impetus to drop this grass horse into claiming for the 1st time.....dangerous sort
4Â Very Very Stella
7Â Van Cortlandt
race 3Â Â average clarity
3 Perfect Rush  par like number (albeit on the turf) considering today's lower level for this Sadler two year old filly in her MSW debut........and her pedigree for the dirt by my book is better for the dirt than the turf.......solid a.m. work on the dirt supports the notion
4 Going to Vegas decent debut for this Miller baby and if she builds on the race she should have as good a shot to win this affair as anyone in this field of only 5.....good rider/trainer combo in Velez & Miller
1 K P Cats Wild  filly ran OK in her maiden debut which was a MC32K.....the effort really doesn't warrant a step up to MC50K but Bob Hess put in a claim for her and must like what he sees and/or the young filly benefited greatly from her debut........seems somewhat dangerous
race 4Â Â average clarity
2 Swirling  blocked/boxed on the turn and the stretch about 2 or 3 lengths or could have won the 22 August version of this race which was run at 1/2 turf furlong less than today's 5 1/2F being offered.........3 reassuring works since the 22nd August race.........V Espinoza wisely stays put
7 C Q Covergirl  4 for 5 on conventional dirt and only 1 for 10 on the turf albeit with 4 2nd's and 3 3rd's......but maybe most importantly she appears to own the best speed in the race and has a shot to get loose on the lead......and bug boy Velez is solid on the grass and that is rare for an apprentice rider
5 Mongolian Window  sharp speed work for her new trainer Enebish Ganbat who just claimed the four year old........interesting to place this route turf runner in a 5 1/2F turf sprint as she is right there usually 5 or 6 furlongs into a given race.......and she did win a 6 1/2F SA turf hill race in 2018.........trainer has had a very nice 2019 racing in S Cal
3Â Donut Girl
race 5Â Â average clarity
4 The Easy Way  just like our top choice in race 4 this fellow ridden by V Espinoza was blocked about 2 1/2L in his latest race in his case in the stretch drive.......that and the extra 1/16 to cover today appears like a positive for the gelding and it won't be for most of his competition in this MC 20K
5 Sharpshootinggeorge  trainer is 0 for his last 65 (at least) but his three year old gelding sure improved in his latest in a one mile route at Lrc.......and.......he acts like another 1/16 with be a plus
3 Spectator's Dream  three year old runner's best two route dirt races are the only two times he raced with the blinkers on racing in a route.........double barrel action from trainer Mendoza as he also conditions our 2nd choice........might get loose here but whereas the 5 horse acts like another 1/16 with be a plus he does not
2Â Super Classic
race 6Â Â below average clarity
1 Out of Balance  fierce late runner might have just enough speed signed up to make her late kick valid enough to get up in time in a one mile grass race........rather strange that for the 3rd straight race Mr. Espinoza is our top choice .........if he goes 0 for 3 he will be on my s*** - list - LOL
8 Raymundos Secret  tough post but this filly has plenty of tactical speed and draws Mr. Prat who won for fun the lone time she was on her back.......hard not to like
5 Vibrance  had plenty of trip trouble in her only two lifetime grass races...........her latest which was run two back fits fine if she displays the same effort/energy and gets an OK trip......and just like Prat today's rider Van Dyke also won for fun on her the only time he rode her......albeit in a dirt race
4Â Courteous
3Â All Star Cast
race 7Â Â average clarity
5 Dukes Up  very consistent improving six year old since Glatt claimed 7 races back........and he just popped his lifetime top effort and the strength of the race is somewhat disguised by a wide trip.......strong 5F best of 54 bullet work put in just one week ago........feeling good.......hot rider/trainer combo......hard not to like
3 Implicitly  dangerous speed horse gets good gate jock Maldonado so he likely will be on the lead .........and his latest race is much better than it appears in print as this colt dueled on a bad rail on 13 Sept. at Lrc......did well to finish only 2L behind the winner
6 Platinum Equity  very consistent since the blinkers were removed 9 races ago......not crazy about racing off of 7 days rest or would have rated this gelding higher
7Â Kenzou's Rhythm
race 8Â Â above average clarity
4 Combat Zone  takes a drop in class with some stout numbers for the 25K nw2 level.........top turf jock in Pratt stays up........with the 4 post to work with it is highly likely Flavien will find the wood or two path on turn one sitting about 3rd, 4th or 5th down the back stretch.......like his chances if "Carnac the Magnificent" has it right
6 War Chest  nicely improved since the blinkers were added 5 races back.......seems best at today's one mile turf distance and that is rather hidden.........has hardly earned his keep so the barn is logically willing to drop to the lowest level of his life......good to see Cedillo stay put
3 Nevermissesabeat  another who seemingly drops to enhance his chances of getting to the circle of joy and appears at his best at the one mile distance........Carla Gaines has made a nice rebound in the 2nd half of 2019 following a couple of lean years......it's nice to see........she might add to her 14% win % here
7Â Blue Skye Jade
2Â Big Sky Logan
