Santa Anita for Friday 7 February 2020

TAKE NOTE:   There will not be a publication for The Racing Digest on Sunday and there will not be any comments for the Saturday publication but the same amount of hard work put into the handicapping.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Austin's Boy   trainer is much better with 2nd time starters and the 1st start for this three year old gelding was decent.......he broke slow and then showed life in the 3 Jan. version of this 5 1/2F turf race for three year old Cal-bred MSW runners.........and today he gets quite the rider upgrade especially for a grass race

4  Blue Blitz   awfully good looking prolonged work tab for this Mike Harrington first timer starter......and I like that some of the better works are out of the gate.......pedigree for the grass is decent........the trainer has shown that he is capable over the years with young debut runners

5  Zero Down   woke up some in his 3rd lifetime start which was his 1st on the grass.......he has been off since the 5F grass race at Del Mar but has put in 10 drills since......and.......his latest work is very solid hinting he will likely pop his best to date today.......pedigree is very good for the sod

7  Perfect Affection

1  World O Luck

race 2    average clarity

3  Canadian Game   (5 2 2 3) racing on the SA main track.......and arguably his lifetime best at SA was run at today's one mile distance the last time this five year old gelding got to race on a fast rated one mile dirt is alarming that he is dropping multiple levels since the 5 Jan. claim by Lerner but not like it used to be as this fellow will be highly scrutinized before being allowed to go to post

2  Brazilian Summer  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE    just ran his lifetime best in latest and if he repeats the race he has a good shot at the winners circle today.......can he handle the 8 day turn around?........that remains to be seen

1  Friendly Steve   eased in latest but looked fine to me........that and trainer is often at his best sprint to route which is the case here for this gelding racing 2nd out after a prolonged layoff of 11 months.........gelding is night and day better loose on the lead and he seems the most likely to grab the front end

race 3    average clarity

6  Smiling Shirlee   highest win % at the meeting (36%) in trainer Jeff Bonde at the helm........nice turf route for this filly in her latest and she has shown that she is a good Stakes caliber filly on the dirt in sprint grass race should fit her just fine........big sub 47 flat bullet drill since her latest suggests she is very sharp........should be on the scene in the late stages

3  Florentine Diamond   quite the MSW debut for this Paula Capestro three year old filly .........crushed her competition with a 7 length win with gaps of 7, 2, 8 lengths behind her........switch to the turf today and with a decent pedigree for it........definite in the hunt for the win if she runs as well on the turf as she did on the Lrc dirt

2  Homebred   O'Neill three year old filly also fits well in this spot and like our top selection she should be motoring late........but unlike our top choice she hasn't exactly been tearing it up in the a.m........thus.......3rd selection

4  Win Often

race 4    average clarity

4  Desert Smoke   sprint-route-sprint is a decent move for the Wong barn and blinkers back on is more than decent move as in 35% win & 73% in the money with his last speed drill a week ago........blinkers sprint speed in latest.........all add up to this mare grabbing the lead early and hopefully never looking back

2  Semi Sweet   very consistent racing at today's one mile dirt distance (7 3 2 1) and this mare has shown she can run well fresh off of the bench in the past.....last race 3 months ago......decent shot to get a nice ground saving mid pack position

5  Conformation   very consistent at the distance on the dirt (5 3 1 1).......would have rated higher if her latest wasn't so dismal.........lost by 16L beating only 2 of 4 foes as the favorite......obviously needs a rebound and if she provides one she should have been rated higher

race 5    average clarity

5  Phast Pharoah  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  vastly improved in his last two races and especially so in his latest which was at today's 5 1/2 furlong turf distance......ran a 101:3 despite breaking slow and sitting close to a solid set of fractions and doing so a bit wide......repeat of the race with a better trip sure appears like it would be tough to overcome

3  Bulletproof One   a little short number wise but this filly facing the guys has a great spot as the only true speed horse in the field........and the two times she faced the opposite sex she won by 8L and lost by a head in the other which was a 5F turf race at SA in a $100K stakes race.....dangerous sort

2  Rookie Mistake   race 2 back which was also at 5 1/2F on the sod is likely good enough to possibly get the job done if Gutierrez works out a good trip..........very reassuring near bullet drill just 6 days and sharp for very a reliable trainer/rider/owner trio

4  Billy Batts

race 6    average clarity

1  Royal Insider   last 6 dirt route races run have led to 4 wins and 2 2nd's and 5 of the races were at SA.......gelding is more than capable running well on or off of the pace........good post and retains Tiago Pereira for the 3rd straight time........only ? mark is the fact he has been wheeled back in very short rest of only 12 days

7  Lambeau   very solid 2nd lifetime start in his first on the dirt to graduate in a race that was run off of 104 days 69 days since his latest should be a "piece of cake" for him to handle.......Shirreffs is strong stat wise getting a maiden to win again in their next in 27% win with his last 26

2  Synthesis   four year old has been away since mid August but he is training as if he is ready fresh off of bench for trainer George Papaprodromou......and if he is lookout as the last time he competed in a dirt route (the SA Derby 5 races back) he ran an adjusted Santucci fig that is 4L below par for today's level of racing.....should be a handsome price

5  Kylemore

race 7    average clarity

6  Lucia's Design   improving with each and every start and her recent best ever 5F bullet drill strongly suggess she will improve once again........that and I like the rider change to bug boy Velez who will likely have this filly forwardly placed by the 1st turn

9  Going to Vegas   improved early turf route speed displayed in her latest bodes well for her chances of clearly most or all by turn one which comes up fast with the rails out 30 feet........last race fits number wise and in her other lifetime turf route which was run 3 back she earned an adjusted for trip Santucci fig that is much better than par and disguised by 6.5L of trip trouble

5  I Give Up   bad trip in her latest in the 12 Jan version of this race hides a better than par effort and she also earned a better than par Santucci fig the only other time she ran in a turf route.......blinkers on today to help her focus..........dangerous sort

3  Wine At Sunset

2  Flamigo Bay
