Santa Anita for Sunday 23 February 2020

The worst day of handicapping in quite some time yesterday so I am looking to make a rebound today.

Best of luck as always!

race 1   above average clarity

1  Classy Ruler   three year old filly ran a race/number for the MSW level that would win 95% of the time but she got beat at 2 to 5 by a neck........no less than five (good) works put in since.......Mike Smith wisely sticks around the potential Graded Stakes winner down the road

3  Merneith   Baffert filly ran a solid final time and flashed some strong early speed in her MSW where she ran 2nd in a 6 1/2 furlong affair.........blinkers off today to slow her down and help her get the two turns.......she likely will get a loose lead making her dangerous at a distance on the dirt that has been kind to speed

2  Regal Beauty   double barrel action from the Baffert barn as he also trains our 2nd selection...........like her barn mate this girl ran a strong debut and the strength of the effort is somewhat disguised by a tough trip........1st at a route but like the other Baffert runner she is bred awfully well to handle one

6  Nora's Joy

8  My Happy Girl

race 2    average clarity

6  Lofty   big awakening in latest with 1st time blinkers to graduate........same turf distance of 5 1/2 furlongs that she ran in her last.......best effort/fig in the race and she might be up for even better as she has worked twice and both drills look rather strong

2  Rstars and Stripes   won for fun in her MC50K debut which was on the dirt........pedigree seems OK for the turf........claimed by Knapp in her debut and he gets Rispoli to ride.......should be in the mix for the winners circle if she takes to the green carpet

4  Secret Square   improving sort and she likely will need the trend to continue today to take down this race...........Rosario wanted the mount back and he and Sadler have won 5 of their last 15 as a team......dangerous sort

3  Mosienko

race 3    average clarity

2  Challah   progressing nicely with each and every race.......last race stands out here and today this four year old Baltas gelding gets a rider upgrade to Prat who is on fire of late teaming up with Mr Baltas........good post and same 1 1/16 to cover as his last race.........improved recent a.m. work........so much points to another strong effort and maybe yet another move forward

6  Zorich   by far at his best racing at SA on the dirt (3 1 2 0) and he actually dead heated with our top choice in his latest and earned a better adjusted for trip Santucci fig than our top pick because of a wide journey......trainer Glatt is waking up and when he legs up Rispoli his horses have been quite "live"

1  Abusive Gary   quite the wake-up in his latest earning a number similar to our top selection but doing so in a sprint........can he preform as well in a route.......we shall see about 1:30 pacific time

5  Unbroken Star

race 4    average clarity

3  Murad Khan   seems like a nice 50K claim and for a trainer in O'Neill who is very dangerous year in and year out 1st following a claim.......he also is quite prolific with the route to sprint move which is the case today........4 speed types in the race and 2 late runners......so........late runner wins out

4  Brandthebartender   solid layoff run in his last especially considering the dirt really isn't his thing........plenty of early gas in the field to aid his late running style.......Umberto Rispoli wisely stays put

2  What'sontheagenda   double barrel action from the O'Neill barn as he also conditions our top pick........six year old is very consistent on the grass when racing at SA.......jock needs to avoid a suicidal speed duel

race 5    average clarity

8  Lucky Long Legs   the D'A seemingly has this filly well prepared for today's drop into MC for the 1st time with two vastly better drills (and that is somewhat subtle) since her 24 Jan race.......2nd out racing with trainer and MSW to MC are both solid stats for D'Amato......rather sure this girl is well meant today

4  Sara Crewe   another trainer in Leonard Powell who is very dangerous with the MSW to MC move (and especially so of late) and 2nd time racing under his guidance..........both are the case today........Rosario takes the mount today making for one significant rider upgrade........hard not to like

9  On the Verge   The Racing Digest liked this Mulhall filly in her maiden debut and she closed resolutely to nearly win.......she ran a par like number/effort so if she builds on the effort it is hard not seeing her anything but tough in today's race

6  Rickie Nine Toe's

3  Polar Route

race 6    below average clarity

1  Belle Chica   impressive 2nd in her 2nd lifetime start which was run off of a 373 day hiatus from the game........3 improved works since the 5 1/2 furlong turf race hinting she muscled up from the effort and that she will produce even more today

4  Va Va Voom   another with a solid 2nd in a MSW 5 1/2F turf race which like our top pick was also off a long layoff.......win-less trainer in 2019/20 but the a.m. work is solid and he is usual better with 2nd outs following layoffs than 1st outs .......hard not to root for Antonio Garcia getting his 1st visit to the winners circle in a long time

6  Rainwineandhereiam   Glatt can pop with a MSW 1st time starter now and then and he sure has this gal training as if she is meant and ready to roll at a high level in her MSW debut.......and the fact he coaxed Prat and his agent to ride supports the notion

3  Civil Suit

8  Spreckels

race 7    average clarity

2  Bold Endeavor   toss his latest as the placement was way too ambitious.......prior to the G2 race this four year old won back to back races rather easily with the blinkers on.......that and he gets 1st time Rosario this afternoon......race lacks speed and he has some but he doesn't need the lead to win so you know Rosario will slow things down

5  Platinum Equity   Knapp is as hot as I can ever remember as almost everything is running better than they appear in print........that and this gelding has shown he dislikes the sod so his latest on it was nothing more than a turf tightener........that and I like the two speed works put in as he should sit closer up than he has been and as mentioned above that is likely a good thing here

4  California Street   seems at his best racing on the dirt at today's one mile distance.........look for Prat to attempt to sit closer than he has been of late so as not to leave to much work to do turning for home

race 8    average clarity

6  Turn the Switch   graduated in an extremely fast MC62,500 one mile grass race and the time/effort seems very valid as 2nd and 3rd came back to win their next out........Eurton likes what he saw as he gives his gelding plenty of time between starts and in the interim has worked him 6 times.......and his pedigree to handle the 10 furlongs is as good as anyone in the field

3  Proud Pedro   Bejarano is in a slump but Prat is not making for quite the rider switch at this moment in time........and when Powell and Prat team up they are lethal especially in a route turf race.......and like our top pick this colt is bred to run all day long

2  Southern King   good race 1st time racing with Miller as the trainer in his latest........Rosario stays put..........four year old finishes his 9F grass races stoutly suggesting 10F of sod will fit him fine...........not out of the win picture by any means

5  Red King

1  Desmond Toss
