Santa Anita for Saturday 7 March 2020

It has been awhile since Santa Anita had a 12 race card with many sizable fields. Sunday's eight race card has quite a few as well.

Purchase for our special publication for Florida Derby day at Gulfstream Park (7 Stakes races only) on March 28th is now available. As in the past the selections will be sent in your email Friday afternoon at approximately 5 p.m. central. Cost for a very limited time is $24.50 or a savings of $6.50.

Best of luck as always!

race 1   average clarity

1  Wine At Sunset   exits a key race where this filly broke a little slow and was rank some costing her 2 or 3 lengths......trainer Eric Kruljac is having a strong meeting and he just got his filly to put in what might be her best preparatory drill to date........dangerous sort and at a price

6  Colombian Gold   race lacks speed and this filly has some and gets quite the rider upgrade to Flavien Prat........that and MSW to MC and 2nd time Peter Miller are strong stats for the ever dangerous trainer who is winning at a 30% clip at the 2019/20 SA meeting

3  I Give Up   wide trips in this girl's last two races hides how well this filly has been running.......new jock today and with three improved drills put in since her last which was run on 7 Feb and her latest work was only 3 days ago and at 5F.......should be tough

10  Danceformunny

9  Flamigo Bay

race 2    average clarity

3  Candy Fury   solid forward move to his lifetime best in this colt's latest with 1st time blinkers and 1st time Rispoli.......and just what you want to see following a lifetime top as improved a.m. work.......that and the cut back from 7F to 6 1/2F appears to be a plus

4  Believe Now   very expensive purchase (1.4 million) draws Rosario for his MSW debut.........copious works and some of them quite strong........and with hints of some speed.......trainer is only 6 % with his last 65 MSW 1st timers but might up that win % today

8  Moon Mischief   lifetime best was run last fall in his 3rd lifetime start.......so......3rd start following a break seems dangerous especially with a much improved set of preparatory works........like the switch to bug boy Velez and his 5 lbs break as he has looked good on this maiden in the past

2  American Code

7  Beachcombing

race 3    below average clarity

8  Rocking Redhead  sure like this youngster's pedigree for a turf sprint.........Baltas has put in copious drills into this filly in preparation for today's MSW debut..........and he gets Rosario to accept the mount which might be more significant than it normally is as the outstanding rider likely had many opportunities to ride others because of the size of this field

3  New Drama   no action on the board in her MSW debut (15 to 1 in only a 6 horse field) hinting she wasn't all that cranked up or meant and yet she ran rather well in a one mile turf route......like the cut back in distance and the only two times that Yakteen has put up Van Dyke over the last couple of months his horses have been "live"

10  Woke Up to Aces   good speed in her MSW debut which was the 1 Feb. version of this 5 1/2 furlong grass race......4F bullet speed work since hints this filly exited the race in good shape......not out of the widow picture by any means with a small forward move which seems doable

9  Affianced

6  Stopped Raining  (should be over 50 to 1)

4  Sapphire Silk

race 4    average clarity

3  Roadster   colt needs a rebound and one appears to be forthcoming today........powerful work tab even by Baffert standards and back to Mike Smith whose record on this colt is eye popping compared to other riders (5 3 1 1) vs (5 0 1 0).......that and colt seems best racing on the SA surface

2  Flagstaff   ultra consistent sort despite having only 10 lifetime starts at the age of six........Espinoza has fit him well as has the SA main track.....owns a nice stalking style.......not out of the win picture by any means......pun intended

1  Manhattan Up   decent shot a fast pace can occur and if it does this colt wouldn't be impossible to upset the field as he is quite consistent at SA when sprinting.......his fig earned in his latest is par like for today's higher level and was at 7F

race 5    average clarity

3  Got Stormy   Mark Casse sure has had this mare very ready when she faces the guys like today.........one win and two seconds in three races and like today the races were Grade 1 affairs.......back to back powerful preparatory grass works supports the notion Casse has his five year old mare razor sharp......hard not to like

1  True Valor   quite the grass rider upgrade today (from one that struggles when riding in S Cal to one that does not) for this Callaghan six year old who will likely sit close to the front end in this race that seems to favor those that do

2  River Boyne   did not see the rebound coming from this horse in his latest where he won quite easily in a Grade 3.......like him today if he builds on the effort as he likes to sit close to the lead and not only should that occur but as mentioned above should favor those that do as the likely fractions being set should be very reasonable

8  Frontier Market

5  Sellwood

race 6    above average clarity

3  Gamine   extremely weak looking foes for this Baffert MSW debut runner (1.8 million at sale - yikes) to deal with......and her a.m. work sure seems strong enough to deal with a good field little lone a weak one.......hard not to place on top

2  Reem   par like MSW debut back on 20 January for this Bafert filly......works since suggest she will fire a similar effort.......but if her barn mate runs like I think she will she likely will need to do better than "a similar effort" today

race 7    average clarity

10  Beguiled   responded to ample time off in her latest in a big way and D'Amato shows patience and gives it to his three year old filly once again.......and in the interim he has put a solid 5 work series into his nicely developing filly.......blinkers on for today which usually I dislike following a strong win for a given horse......but not when the trainer is the D'A.......should be in the mix from the get go in an affair that does not have that much speed signed up

4  Stela Star   on the improve with each and every race last summer/fall in Ireland.........been away since 19 October but she is working as if she is extremely meant and ready for her 1st U S of A run........the fact Rosario takes the mount supports the notion

3  "Bella Vita"   sprint-sprint-route scenario for this Cal-bred filly who has run two consecutive strong 5 1/2 furlong grass races.......pedigree for a route is decent......Prat could have been aboard others in here but stays put........connections might get a taste of the "good life" following this race

11  Warren's Showtime

9  Croughavouke

race 8    average clarity

6  Storm the Court   won the B C Juv. last fall at 45 to 1 and the effort was no fluke as his number earned was quite a bit better than most of the B C Juv races run over the years.........colt had his sprint prep........should be ready to roll.......nothing against Prat but I like the switch to Rosario (for a dirt route at least)

4  Authenic   solid win in his latest with an 8L win in a G3 at Santa Anita........and he has been able to put in 8 works since the 5 Jan race........should be in the mix from the get go and tough as nails thru-out for Baffert and company

2  Honor A. P.   brilliant effort/time when last seen on 13 October and the race was at SA.......if Shirreffs gets similar from him today off of the 5 month layoff he has as good a shot as anyone of visiting the circle of joy this afternoon

5  Thousand Words

race 9    average clarity

1  She's Our Charm   much better post for this highly competitive four year old filly who ran a strong Santucci fig in her latest where she predictably got caught wide having to deal with the 9 post........seems likely to get a nice mid pack or stalk position saving ground thru turn one......and that my friends in more than 1/2 the battle

3  Courteous   race two back at 9F is too far for her.......tried to rate in her next start and that didn't work........race three back is very strong where she opened up a lead and 1/16th further than today........look for Cedillo to send today........dangerous front end potential

4  Heathers Grey   by far at her best racing on the SA turf at today's one mile turf distance.........and she should have enhanced endurance following a 12 furlong grass race.......Gryder knows her well and has solid history riding her......hard not to like

6  Muchly

12  Peter's Kitten

8  Lavender

race 10    average clarity

4  Gift Box   has been facing tougher horses and loves the SA main track with 3 wins and a 2nd in 2 G1 races and 2 G2 races........likes ample time between starts and gets it today......should be one tough cookie

5  Midcourt   last two races are par like efforts for today's tougher level and the race 2 back is hidden in it's strength........but.......he will likely need his lifetime best to conquer our top choice or have our top pick falter a little

7  Hofburg   solid late running Bill Mott invader likely will need our top two to knock heads early and often and tire each other out enough to get this five year old up in time from far out of it.......stranger things have happened

8  Endorsed

1  Multiplier

race 11   below average clarity

3  Quick   slightly tardy start and ran a bit too wide or would have won her 1st start in the USA.......she really finished fast hinting she exited her race in good shape........like her chances today is that is the case.......Rosario staying put also supports the idea she has held form or might be even sharper

5  Grinningeartoear   Koriner filly is a perfect 2 for 2 at the 5 1/2 furlong turf sprint distance..........she should get a nice stalk ground saving trip as the 10, 11 & 12 all are speed horses and likely will be all out to clear by or on the turn which should make for some fast fractions......if that is what transpires this gal might be in the drivers seat

7  Anonymously   Cedillo might have gotten off our 2nd choice to ride this Cerin filly so if that is the case this filly is likely feeling good......and like our 2nd choice she mid get a nice stalk position behind a fast pace

4  Tijori

10  Queen of the Track

race 12    average clarity

3  Ziyanair   only two races run on the dirt with the blinkers off are par like efforts and his latest which was at 1 1/16 is somewhat hidden by a wide trip........good post to work with for Geovanni who gets the mount for the 1st time.......he should sit no worse than 2 wide on the 1st turn with the two runners lined up inside of him rather slow early

7  Rough Ride   trainer is quite often dangerous "1st at a route" and that is the case for this gelding's 2nd lifetime start today.........works sure stand out here especially the solid back to back to back 6F works........should be a nice price

1  Speakerofthehouse   last route race at 1 1/16 is decent and disguised in it's strength......one mile dirt race 2 back is better.......might be the surest to hit the board but as far as winning is concerned that might be a different matter as he appears to be a hanger of sorts......fifth different rider in a row gets a shot in Umberto Rispoli

4  Constitutionaffair
