Del Mar for Friday 10 July 2020

Opening day Del Mar. Life is good!

A special welcome to those of you that only play Del Mar and maybe a few other special days at the other tracks. Great to have you back!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

4  Secret Touch   most of his career fits solidly at the 16K level.......a.m. preparation for this six year old is stout........gelding hasn't won for over 18 months so the drop makes sense........good chance this fellow winds up in the circle of joy for Peter Eurton and company

6  Wilshire Dude   new trainer for today in Kristin Mulhall........big bullet 5F work at Del Mar put in less than a week ago hints the trainer might have the "trump card" for this six year old gelding.......we shall see if that is the case about 2 p.m. pacific

1  Camino de Estrella   Knapp gelding is extremely consistent running at today's one mile distance on the dirt or the turf......and he just won at nine furlongs which seems a bit further than he wants to mile should be a piece of cake........LOL

8  Blame It On Kitty

2  Spanish Hombre

race 2    below average clarity

2  Aqua Seaform Shame   lone 5F turf race was at Del Mar and led to graduation day in a race run 8 months ago........the time/number earned was solid for a Nov. two year old filly and it turned out to be a very key race.........Richie Baltas has put 11 works into her dating back to 17 April.......that screams that she is "meant and ready" fresh off of the bench.......Fuentes wisely stays put

4  Road Rager   believe this filly exited her latest which was her lifetime best in good shape as she has been able to put in 4 works since the 30 May 7F race on the dirt.......not sure if she is as good on the grass as the dirt but we are likely to get that answer today.........four year old should be in the mix from the get go

5  Mean Sophia   lone turf race was run off of a long layoff and wasn't bad......and considering that a Miller runner went off at 7 to 1 in a 4 horse field I doubt she went fully fit........if that is the case lookout today

race 3    average clarity

4  Charlito  just popped his lifetime best in his 1st to date on the dirt......that race sure looks good in this spot if he can preform as well in his 1st to date on the Dmr surface.......recent near bullet 5F drill put in at Del Mar hints that he will.......and he once again gets to race at 6 1/2 furlongs

2  Garth   Baffert colt who has been away since late December runs well fresh and his work regiment says that he will once again today.......jock upgrade to Prat......three year old should have the best shot at grabbing the lead seemingly with only our 3rd choice to challange him for it

5  Rayray   last race is decent but what we want is his effort 2 back where he ran an effort that would be very tough here if he rebounds to it........and the strength of the race is disguised by dueling on a somewhat dead rail on 15 May at SA

3  Midnight Mystery

race 4    average clarity

2  Table for Ten   four your old gelding from the D'A's barn went off at 48 to 1 in his MSW debut hinting he wasn't all that cranked up and yet he still ran 3rd (likely surprising his connections) in the 12 June version of this race run over at SA........he should be fully fit today........Cedillo wisely stays put

6  El Diablo Rojo   trainer Craig Lewis had a good opening day at Del Mar last summer and he appears as if he wants to get off to a good start once again as he sure has this gelding training sharply........race totally lacks speed and when this three year old exits the gate well he has some

5  Cali Caliente   ignore lone turf race as it appears to be nothing more that a muscle him up turf route start on the dirt in a sprint was solid......back to a turf route today and with a pedigree that suggets we should ignore his 24 beaten length MSW debut on the sod

4  Hammering Lemon

7  Tropical Terror

race 5    average clarity

1  Claim of Passion  1st ever dirt route in his latest and did he ever like the one mile race......he ran a strong race nearly winning a nw2 25K despite a slightly tardy start and way too wide of a trip...........Abel Cedillo will be out to make amends

5  Mongolian Legend   last run at Lrc fits a ton here but it appears as if he loves the Los Alamitos surface and has something to prove at Del Mar.......but on the other hand he appears to appreciate the blinkers on........something gotta give

6  Dia de Pago   bad trip in latest (very wide thru-out) or would have won racing at the lowest level of his career........good sign that Cerin gets him out of claiming and he has him sharp in the a.m..........dangerous sort

7  Zorich

8  Ronamo

race 6    above average clarity

2  Super Game   copious drills and many of them are impressive for this Brian Koriner MSW 1st time starter........speed and endurance has been put into this two year old Cal-bred filly who sure appears ready to roll at first asking

8  Luxury Liner   the work pattern for this two year old filly MSW 1st time starter from the Miyadi barn has shades of the late Mike Mitchell written all over in very tightly spaced drills (4 or 5 day intervals) has tossed 2 winners from 2 starters and one of them was a Stakes winner.......believe it is all systems go for this young filly

5  Smoothlikebuttah   broke 12 slow in debut and still finished only 5 behind the winner.........broke 2 slow and ran wide and checked 1 1/2 lengths and still only was 3 3/4L behind the winner in 2nd start.......blinkers on to help rider gets a shot.......dangerous sort for sure

6  Big Andy

1  Taming the Tigress

race 7    below average clarity

4  Pulpit Rider   hard not seeing a stout set of fractions in this race with 3 quick early speed types in the lineup.......if the heavy pace comes to fruition this late running Puype mare should be flying late coming off a much needed layoff run........good grass rider in Juan Hernandez and he gets a good post to work with

5  Maxim Rate   four year old filly seems at her best at today's one mile turf distance and should get a nice mid pack ground saving trip........last summer at Del Mar on 17 August she got to run off of 4 weeks rest and she ran a race that would be tough here.........26 days since her layoff race on 14's not rocket science

8  Strike At Dawn   believe this filly is at her best on the Del Mar turf course and she gets first time Flavien Prat........and Baltas & Prat have won 7 of thier last 14 teaming up........yikes

6  Zee Drop

7  Great Return

race 8    average clarity

4  Sash  SCRATCHED OUT  good move by Glatt to put this fellow on the dirt as the switch in surfaces sure moved him forward......both lifetime dirt races were route races and are quite a bit better than par for today's it seems to come down to how well he will handle a sprint albeit one at 7F which should to enhance his chances of success.......very stout rider/trainer combo in Prat/Glatt

2  Dreams of Valor   not that much speed in this affair and this six year old has some......and with speed jock Maldonado up this gelding has a shot of getting a lead.........dangerous sort

6  Lightning Fast   tough year for Bill Spawr but he might jump start things here with this gelding who is at his best fresh.........5+ months "fresh" today...........very aggresssive work tab........not out of the win picture by any means.......pun intended

7  St. Joe Bay

3  Silken Prince

race 9    average clarity

2  El Tigre Terrible   both sprint turf races which were run at SA sure fit well vs. today's competiton......three year old gelding could have made in a perfect 2 for 2 (and both were Stakes races) on the sod if not for being blocked about three lengths in his latest which was run on 6 June...........and today we get a turf rider upgrade to Flavien Prat which greatly enhances his chances of handling his 1st at a route

7  Hit the Road  Dan Blacker got off to a good start at the 2019 summer Del Mar meeting and he appears as if he want to get off to a good start once again as he sure has this talented colt training well.........Rispoli wisely sticks around

12  Margot's Boy   nasty post but he might have enough speed to clear all or most by the 1st turn......dangerous if he does as he sure likes the front end of things

6  K P All Systems Go

8  Tizamagician

race 10    average clarity

10  Castle Gate   2 for 2 on conventional dirt winning the two races by a combined 8 lengths..........a.m. preparation is good especially his lone drill at Dmr where he popped a best of 35 4F bullet.......should be in the mix from the get go and tough throughout if he holds form

5  Julius   somewhat suspicious drop but this five year old gelding sure likes the Del mar he has enough physical ability left in him he might be quite dangerous in this spot

4  Artie B Good   drop makes sense as this five year old has only earned $1,100 since he was claimed on 19 april 19..........3rd out after a layoff and turf to dirt.......both good trainer stats for Steve Knapp who has had a nice 2020

9  Knifes Edge

8  Dark Hedges
