race 1     average clarity

3  Impression   4 for 11 at the distance on the dirt and and 0 for 14 everywhere else.......lifetime best was on the Dmr dirt.........not my favorite trainer with multiple level drops but this gelding is training too well to ignore

4  Conquest Lemonraid   why not drop 3 claiming levels with the lucrative program for shippers........would have been top pick if it wasn't for Gryder getting the call which is a concern as he is not exactly the go to guy for Bob Hess

5  Will Dancer   night and day better when he gets a loose lead and he might get loose today

race 2    below average clarity

6  I'm the Boss of Me   works strongly suggest this Miller filly 1ster is well meant and ready to roll.........and in those drills are hints of some good early speed.......trainer has been stout with his "babies" this year

5  Cielo d'Oro   another training as if she will fire a solid race in her MSW 1st start........trainer John Sadler is awfully good at getting turf sprinters ready enough to be a big factor in their maiden debut.......and look who accepts the mount - Mr. Prat

2  Gravitron   good turf pedigree for this Hollendorfer 1ster......filly has worked enough to be ready at 1st asking........might want longer with her pedigree that screams the longer the better but if she gets a hot pace she might be motoring fast late

1  Mandragora Seeker

3  Queens Map  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

race 3    average clarity

6  Liberalism   live in all 4 racing endeavors and two of the four look very strong vs. today's competition.........leading rider Rispoli gets the call.......three year old filly appears to be doing well work wise as she has drilled 5X since her latest which was on June 7th

4  Elgofranco   arguably her lifetime best was her lone race at Del Mar in an effort that was run off of 23 days rest........26 days since her latest which was at Lrc.......two strong improved preparatory works since the 5 July run at Lrc.......seems poised for a possible lifetime best this afternoon

1  Althea Gibson   decent MSW debut and like our 2nd choice she has put in two nice works since the July 5th race at Lrc

7  All Star Heat

2  Angel Creek

race 4    average clarity

2  Honos Man   hard not to believe that Bob Hess will pull out all stops to have this four year old gelding (2 1 1 0 on the sod) very ready with the additional money for shippers........and whereas he put up a rider he seldom uses in today's first race with a shipper he uses pal Kent Desormeaux for this shipper going after the additional purse $$$

5  Seeking Refuge   seems best at today's one mile turf distance and even though this colt is (5 0 1 0) on the Del Mar turf his best effort/fig was run at Del Mar in a one mile turf race.......and the race was one heck of a key one as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th all came back to win

7  All American Hero   double barrel action for O'Neill as he also trains our 2nd pick........1st time gelding and with improved a.m. work.......dangerous

1  Cajun Treasure

3  Descartes

race 5    average clarity

5  Himiko   big effort for this Baffert three year old filly in her 2nd lifetime start running an effort that is better than par for the MSW level......and the way she finished at 6 1/2F she should handle the 7F distance quite well today.....and many will not.......4 works since her 21 June 2nd......feeling good

3  Happier   Baffert also trains this three year old who has a work tab that screams ready.......never easy to handle 7F as a 1st time starter but with her powerful work regiment and stellar pedigree it is not much of a concern but enough to make her 2nd pick-a-rue

8  Lookintogeteven  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  cut back in distance is a plus.......ran third to a next out winner who scored in an allowance race in her next start.....should be motoring late

1  Via Angelica  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

2  Last First Kiss

race 6    average clarity

2  Sicilia   Neil Drysdale is stout with Euro imports and he has worked this four year old filly 12X since 3 May including 3 works on the turf.......filly appears best on firm turf and that might have been the catalyst for getting her to S Cal where the turf is usually very firm

3  Salvator   improved speed and final time for this four year old gelding in a race run off of an 8 month hibernation........3 strong works since the race and two of them were on the turf........a necessary forward move appears to be in the cards.........leading rider Rispoli wisely sticks around

4  Go Daddy Go   solid wake-up in last and 3 lbs off today......low % turf jock in S Cal but he gave this colt a nice ride in his latest

6  Tiberius Mercurius

5  Silenced

race 7    below average clarity

1  Tribal War Chant   very strong conventional dirt race in his latest which was run at Pln........should be a ton if he holds form and can handle the Del Mar main track as well........trainer year in and year out is often at his most dangerous 3rd out after a layoff which is the case here

3  Brickyard Ride   Craig Lewis three year old colt can really fly and should open up a lead in this spot.......would have been top choice if it wasn't for his desire to gravitate over to the rail as the inside was a bad place to be the last 4 cards at Dmr.......is the rail better today so far?

4  Cali Dude   away since 1 Nov. where he ran 2nd in a $150K Stakes race for Cal-breds.....returns with a jock upgrade and with a.m. works that says "ready"

7  Summer Fire

6  Appreciated

race 8    average clarity

1  Ivy League   trainer is as good as anyone in S Cal getting MSW 1st timer starters to fire a solid turf route......and I like his choice in riders as Rispoli has plenty of experience (overseas) getting developing two year old runners to handle the challenge of a turf route in their debut........good post.......good works........excellent turf pedigree

8  Floral Essence   Clifford Scott is having a very strong rebound year (albeit with limited starters) especially so for the owners of this two year old filly.........like our top choice this filly has good works and a solid pedigree to handle the green carpet

6  Madone   another 1ster in very good hands who appears ready to rock & roll in her MSW debut......but unlike our top two picks she has a questionable turf pedigree

3  Basilia

9  She's a Lil Flirt

race 9    average clarity

4  El Tigre Terrible   sprint-route-sprint scenario for this Cal-bred and for a trainer in Peter Miller who is dynamite with the move.........as in 24 for his last 71........and he owns a very solid number as a two year racing on the Dmr main track (1 Sept. 19)

2  Margot's Boy   trainer Craig Lewis has made quite the rebound as a trainer in 2019 & 2020 following quite a few disappointing years in a row........1st on the dirt today for this gelding who has done well in turf routes.......two works on the Del Mar dirt are very good and hint the the transition to the dirt should be OK

1  Rookie Mistake   double barrel action for Miller as he also trains our top pick.......and whereas most trainers that start 2 in a race often are "live" with only one of them the opposite is true for Peter Miller

6  Clayton Delaney

race 10    below average clarity

6  Spanish Count  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE  Baltas sure can get a given horse to fire a big turf route off of an extended break from the game......that is the case for this three year old 2nd time starter.........and the trainer is solid with the MSW to high priced MC move.......1st time gelding to boot

10  Montana Moon   four year old has an abundance of early speed and like our top choice races as a 1st time gelding........not my favorite turf rider in Blanc but he is decent with turf route speed horses.......very dangerous and likely will go off higher than his 5 to 1 ML

3  Exhort   needs his effort two back which was the only time this gelding attempted racing in a turf route from off of the pace......and with the speed of our 2nd pick that appears to be a given this afternoon

4  Railsplitter

5  Exeter

race 11    average clarity

4  Atina   trainer is polar to start the meet and could use a win so he drops this mare in claiming........six year old likes the one mile dirt distance offerred today and she is one for one at Del Mar and the effort/number earned was arguably her lifetime best

6  Majestic Diva   a ton and 1/2 at today's level if she brings her "A game" (as in 2 races back and 5 back)......only one dull drill since her latest which was poor.......but then again works aren't everything especially when you are attempting to drop a given horse multiple levels like this mare

10  Paige Runner   drops precipitously to ensure victory ? or "claim me please"........tough call but dangerous potential

5  Lookout Taylor

8  Diamond Value
