Saratoga for Saturday 8 August 2020

Saratoga's big day is even bigger with the Ky Derby 4 weeks from now!

Best of luck as always!

race 1   below average clarity

2  Entry of High Tide & Gunman   both 1/2's of the entry appear dangerous with solid a.m. work and they look similar.....both are coming off prolonged layoffs for their 2nd lifetime start.......Todd Pletcher is stout 1st at a route - running off of long layoffs - and with 2nd time starters.......good grass pedigree for both as well

3  Doswell   4 second place finishes in 4 lifetime grass races.......gelding has been absent since a poor run in the slop last September (maybe hurt in the race)........returns to the race wars with a new trainer (Brown to Tagg) who has this five year old well prepared for his 1st start in 11 months........easily his lifetime best effort was his lone race at Saratoga which like today was run on the inner turf course........might be hanger

4  Bay Street Money   latest is awfully nice and today he gets Lasix........trainer is way better than his overall record 1st time he puts a horse on the controversial drug......upside potential here

6  The Angry Man

race 2    average clarity

1  Entry of Lil Commissioner & Musical Heart   the 1A is an OK toss in but prefer the 1 horse as Lil Commissioner since the blinkers were put on has won 4 of 6 races and the 3 that were run on fast rated dirt all fit well at today's slightly higher level........Franco should work out a good trip as this gelding has tactical speed in a race that seems set for those up close early

3  Shalako   seven year old is in rebound mode and more than deserving of another step up in claiming following a win at the 25K level.........jock upgrade to go along with the same weight and distance as his latest race with the step up.......hard not to like

6  Creative Style   decent shot to get loose on the lead with a good route speed jock in Manuel Franco........and the gelding can run just fine without the lead

race 3    average clarity

7  Graetz   trainer has really woken up in a big way at the Saratoga meeting and often is "not in a hurry" with a given runner so that makes this filly who is "on the improve" very dangerous......not much speed in here so Saez can work out a nice trip sitting close up .........a.m. work since this girl's latest is improved supporting the notion that this filly can make a necessary forward move

9  Light in the Sky   meets top gun stays put for a relatively small barn and why not as De Paz seemingly gives Jose Ortiz nothing but live runners.....solid effort for this filly in the 19 July version of this race......should be flying late

3  Risky Mischief   three races to date and the one that wasn't a Stakes race (his MSW debut) was a 5 1/2 length win........allowance race today for his 1st on the grass which he owns a good pedigree for.......and he shows a decent 4F turf work..........Irad Ortiz stays.........very dangerous

8  Drynachan

4  Ava K's Girl

race 4    average clarity

5  Hieroglyphics   trainer is not afraid to drop to win and that is likely what he is doing today........gelding is 2 for 4 on the inner turf and the other two are decent races as well........and he also appears that his best distance is in one mile grass races..........significant rider upgrade for his 3rd out since the Maker claim at GP

2  Siding Spring   another trainer in Morley who seems to be dropping his gelding to enhance his chances of winning as opposed to the "claim me please" scenario........seven year old should benefit from his layoff race which appeared to be a gimme.......race lacks speed and he appears to have as much of the commodity than anyone......thus making him quite dangerous

8  Golden Spear  consistent sort and he is one for one on the Saratoga grass and like today it was on the inner course........Johnny V stays put for 2nd race after the layoff

10  Bootlegger

9  Holiday Bonus

race 5    average clarity

7  Mutasaabeq   Saez hasn't won for Pletcher over the last two months with 9 starts for the world class trainer (he has hit board 5 times) but that drought might change here with this 1ster who has popped two impressive bullet gate drills at Sar in preparation for his two year old MSW debut.......colt likely has some early gas in a race that might lack it

5  Guana Cay   trainer is often at his most dangerous with the turf to dirt move especially with his young horses.........that is the case today for this filly (facing the boys) who appears to have muscled up off her turf debut at Kee where she went off at 1 to 2.......since the race... she put in back to back solid 4F works.......high in demand I Ortiz stays put

3  Raise the Rent   Rudy Rodriguez is low % with MSW 1st timers but he is having a good week and gets Rosario to ride this 1ster.......should go off a decent price

6  Bottle Rocket Man

race 6    average clarity

3  American Monarch   Bill Mott pops with a 1st time starter now and then and this two year old owns two consecutive bullet works at Sar to complete his a.m. preparation for his MSW debut......never easy to get a baby to go a turf route in their debut but this colt is bred to run all day long and has a strong pedigree for the sod

6  Mystical Man   Albert Stall has the 2nd best win percentage in this race with debuting horse on the grass and the only one better is the USA's top turf Trainer in Chad Brown........and I like that he sees fit to send this one to Sar for his debut as he has only run 7 so far at the Spa but all but one were "live"

1  Secret Potion  (not the best name for a race horse)..........dangerous 1st starter from the USA's best grass trainer in Chad Brown

2  Pivotal Mission

10  Fire At Will

race 7    average clarity

2  Cookie Dough   away since April when last seen with the busted and disgraced Saffie but this filly could hardly be training any faster than she has been for new trainer Juan Alvarado........she owns plenty of early speed but whereas the other two speed horses in the race (1 & 5) seem totally one dimensional she is not as she has taken back and won in the past.......might wind up the highest price on the board

7  Come Dancing   six year old won this prestigious race last year by 3 1/4 lengths and overall is 2 for 3 at Sar.......this Grade 1 should have a brutal pace up front which this filly would benefit from.........Carlos Martin is (9 0 0 0) to start the Saratoga meeting but a win in a Grade 1 would make the record a distant memory

4  Bellafina   loves sunny Southern California but has done poorly when shipping out of town.......still I respect her and the trainer quite a bit and she draws the meets leading jock.......dangerous 3rd choice

5  Letruska

race 8    average clarity

4  Shekky Shebaz   trainer Clement is firing on all cylinders and make that 8 cylinders........five year old has a nice set up where he can stalk two speed horses in the 2 and the 5 and with the rest of the field likely quite a few lengths behind him.......such a deal and for a top jock in I Ortiz

1  Imprimis   gelding needs a rebound and his recent works hint at one........first ever at Saratoga but this six year sure likes abbreviated turf sprints of 5 and 5 1/2 furlongs where he is 7 for 11 in the win column......and he is reunited with J Ortiz who won on him in 2018

2  American Sailor   eight year old speed vs. nine year old speed in the 5 horse........I'll take the younger fellow especially with the rider switch to a top echelon jock on his back in many a moon

6  Pulsate

race 9    below average clarity

5  Olympic Games   filly started her career with a bang with 3 straight daylight wins in France vs the boys.....then she tailed off.......following a much needed break of 7 months she showed up in the U S of A in the Clement barn where she appears to have gotten her mojo back.....the further she races the better and you don't get too many races in the States further than 12 furlongs.......good to see I Ortiz stay put

1  Mrs. Sippy   one of the true marathon horses in the race.......filly had something go amiss in the BCFMturf and has been absent since the early Sept. race...........should be a ton in a Grade 3 if she returns fully fit........trainer has been chilly to start the meeting or would have been top pick-a-rue

7  Fools Gold   handles Saratoga turf and the grueling 1 1/2 turf distance.......no support at the windows especially for a Chad Brown horse suggests the race was a gimme to tighten up like only a race can do sometimes and be a full throttle for her 2nd out after a layoff

4  My Sister Nat

race 10    average clarity

5  Gamine  nearly broke the (one turn) one mile track record at Belmont with an 18 length win so unless she dislikes the Saratoga surface and the (one turn) 7 furlongs should be to her liking.......but.......she has been able to get loose on the lead in all three of her lifetime races and might not today as the horse just to the inside and to the outside of her also have some high early speed

3  Mrs. Danvers   off pace filly steps way up but it might not matter if the 4, 5 & 6 all go after the front end and set an unsustainable set of fractions........top jock Ortiz stays aboard

6  Venetian Harbor   Baltas filly owns a ton of talent and I wouldn't be surprised if Rosario attempts to take her back off of the front end which is something she hasn't tried yet........it might depend on what Santana does with the #4.........not out of the win picture by any means

race 11    above average clarity

6  Tiz the Law  tons of talent as he is 5 for 5 on fast tracks and all his wins were by 3L or more........colt has developed into one smooth running push button individual which goes a long way in the top three year old Grade 1 historic dirt races which the Travers is part of........NY bred shows few signs that he won't get the 10 furlongs and he is proven on the Sar surface

3  Uncle Chuck   both lifetime starts are par like adjusted Santucci figs for today's Grade 1 level and that's saying something special  in a MSW race..........firmly believe this colt might be as good in the long run as the favorite but "the Law" has already won three Grade 1 races so he might have this guy over a barrel experience wise

2  Country Grammer   nice forward move in his latest but this time around it will have to be better than "nice" to handle the top two unless of course they they duel in a vicious set of splits

4  Max Player

7  Caracaro

race 12    average clarity

5  Misty Taste   not much in two starts for busted trainer Jason Servis but this filly has been laid up fo 10 1/2 months and returns in the capable hands of Kelly Breen  who has her training like he owns the trump card for this three year NY bred.......and I Ortiz is up and the jock has won 2 of 3 for the trainer over the last 2 months

2  Monificent   race lacks speed and he owns some........and he likely exited his latest (an improved 2nd lifetime start) in good shape as he draws the attention of J Ortiz and his agent.......believe he will improve again today

9  Bankers Beast   earned a solid turf fig in her MSW debut.........and trainer Stidham is often at his best turf to dirt and 2nd lifetime start.......not out of the win picture by any means.......pun intended

7  Tiny Magoo

3  Blitchton
