Del Mar for Saturday 14 November 2020

Sure hope the rest of racetracks in America are paying attention to how well the "horse safety" measures are working in S Cal these days. It bodes well for the future of the sport in California where eventually there will be no doubt where the best racing in the USA will be both on the dirt and the turf. California has the wealth and the climate and now the safest racing in the USA.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Superstition   2 solid (better than par for today's MSW level) efforts at 5 1/2F on the grass at SA.........sharp reassuring 4F drill since her latest run 3 weeks ago.........cut back of 1/2 furlong seems like a plus.......should be tough for Mandella and company if she handles the Del Mar turf as well as she has handled the SA sod

2  Irish Aura   very solid works for this Baltas MSW 1st time starter and Baltas is quite dangerous with his debut turf sprint runners........good post and a good grass rider in Rispoli

7  Le Tub   by far at her best on the Del Mar turf........both lifetime races were better than par efforts at today's 5F distance........leading rider to start the new Del Mar meeting gets the call in the name of Abel Cedillo

4  Vegas Palm

6  Marie

race 2    average clarity

4  Babael   four year old colt has only raced twice in dirt route races and the efforts are two of his lifetime best and fit well here.........sharp near bullet 4F work only 5 days ago hints he is doing well for Ellis and company........likely will go after the lead and with a switch in riders to bug boy Centeno and his 7 lbs weight break........the only time this colt raced with an apprentice it led to his best to date at Dmr

6  Hapi Hapi   three year old gelding seems well placed to win (as opposed to the connections getting too high on him following a his maiden breaking win) and he is improving ever since Eurton took over the training.........he is coming off of his best yet and the strength of the effort is disguised to some degree by a wide trip.......would have been top choice if it wasn't for two dull races at Dmr albeit with a different trainer

3  Alvaaro   lifetime best was run the last time this four year old gelding competed at Dmr on the dirt where he faced better and nearly won earning a strong number for today's lower level.......that and he races turf to dirt which is one of the trainers better moves (Hess is 19% with his last 100 sod to dirt)

1  Single Me Out

5  Next Revolt

race 3    below average clarity

2  Shes'a Perfectlady   sprint-sprint-route scenario for this three year old turf filly who moved forward in her 2nd lifetime start.......and........the strength of the effort is disguised by a loss of 4L to trip.........not much speed in this race and this filly might show some coming off of two sprints.......decent ML

4  Rocking Redhead   another with a solid move in the desired direction in her 2nd lifetime start and like our top pick the strength of the race is also hidden.........two sprints under her belt setting up today's route race........very solid trainer in Baltas the 1st time he sends a turf horse "long".......meets leading jock stays put......also a decent ML

3  England's Rose   filly earned one big adjusted Santucci fig in her MSW dirt debut breaking poorly and then racing green......cost the filly about 7L.......and she only lost by 3L.......1st turf and 1st route but bred to handle both.......sure seems dangerous if she settles down today

9  Ya Beauty

8  This Tea

race 4    average clarity

5  Honoring Major   seems like a decent claim by Hess at CD and Bob brings back his new shooter for the same claiming price he claimed him for........latest preparatory work at Del Mar hints this four year old gelding has settled in nicely (2nd best of 27 at the distance of 5F on the Dmr surface 8 days ago)

7  Pubilius Syrus   another changing trainers today following a claim of a horse who just ran a strong 1st ever on the dirt to win at the 12,500 level earning a number that fits fine at the 25,000 level.......and Glatt just got his new acquisition to work a sizzling 46:2 bullet work albeit at SA hinting he has this five year old very sharp

1  Wilshire Dude   the "dude" appears as if he can get loose in this spot but he doesn't have to lead to win.......that hints he can be rated and that jockey Gonzalez might keep the fractions he cuts out reasonable enough to finish up well enough to win........we shall see about 2PM pacific

2  Conquest Cobra

race 5    average clarity

6  Little Liliana    solid a.m. work for this John Sadler MSW 1st timer.........draws Prat who is often at his very best with two year old developing grass horses........trainer is very dangerous with filly sprint turf 1st time starters........filly owns a good pedigree for a turf sprint

5  Squared Shady   one nice wake-up move forward in her latest which was her 1st on the sod.......cut back in distance of 1/16 should be a plus as this youngster flattened out late in th grass race finishing a distance 2nd and her two previous dirt races which were also run at 5 1/2F.......new jock gets a opportunity and Maldonado has a shot at getting loose on the lead.......and......that is right up alley

9  Agata   very dangerous looking works for this Carla Gaines MSW 1st timer but a little suspect as far as a turf pedigree is concerned.......tough call but enough to make 3rd pick-a-rue

2  Del Mar Flash

4  Princess Sadie

race 6    average clarity

8  Kiss Today Goodbye   lifetime best and by a wide margin was the only time this colt raced on the Del Mar dirt........the effort is way better than par for today's racing level.......and he might be awfully muscled up coming off of two straight 9F grass races.......and........he is an off pace runner in a race with plenty of speed signed up

6  Canadian Pride   seems like the speed of the speed.........like our top choice this three year old earned a fig that is quite a bit better than par for the nw alw level offered here.......given 51 days to recover from the big run and in the interim he has put in a solid looking series of 4 works.......Prat stays put.......hard not to like

3  Divine Armor   late runner in a field with plenty of speed signed up........same as he had in his last race where he graduated.........that effort was way back in early Sept. but he has put in copious furlongs of work.......dangerous sort

5  Secret Touch

7  Mystery Man

race 7    average clarity

2  One Flew South   par race at today's level in his latest in a race run off of an eight month hiatus from the game.......blinkers go on and just what you want to see as in an improved drill (best of 34 bullet 4F work).........meets leading jock rides for the 1st time........O'Neill is really starting to get good in this abbreviated turf sprints......hard not to like this four year old today

4  Preaching Trainer   the shorter the race the better as he won his lone 5F turf race at Dmr despite having to deal with a tough 11 post which led to a very wide trip which Umberto Rispoli overcame........and in two of his three 5 1/2F turf races at SA he led at the 5F mark in those races..........Umberto is back up after being absent for a race

8  Thanks Mr. Edison   the cut back of 1/2 furlong sure appears to be a plus for this Jeff Bonde sprinter.......good to see speed jock Maldonado stay put

5  Mr. Lovejoy

6  Flip the Coin Jan

race 8    average clarity

2  Private Mission   two year old filly got pounded at the windows in her MSW debut at SA and did not disappoint running an effort that is a length better than par for today's $100K Stakes level........that race was at the same sprint distance as today's race........Baffert filly continues to work as if she is something special.......for me the only small ? mark is how she will handle the Dmr surface

3  Canoodling   following three straight grass races to start her career she switches to the dirt which her pedigree suggests she will handle just fine......all three of her grass races are decent and when examining her running lines it appears to me that she might be at her very best in sprint races especially those further than 6F........should be closing fast late

6  Miss Costa Rica

5  Queengol

race 9    average clarity

(14 AE  By Moonlight is dangerous if draws into the field)

7  Circleofchampions   colt from the Gaines barn was shuffled back early in his MSW debut and then he showed plenty of life from there in a 5 1/2 furlong turf sprint 4 weeks ago at SA.........turf route today and that is one dangerous proposition for the opposition as 1st at a route is one strong move for trainer Carla Gaines........good to see Rispoli stay put

6  Club Champ   Baltas 1ster hasn't missed a beat in a.m. at Slr with weekly works dating way back to at least August.........and the last three drills hint Richard means business (gate work - gate work - solid 6F work).........brand new sire might get off to a good start

1  Big Story   very similar to our top selection as this two year old gelding was also shuffled back early in his last race and then he showed plenty of life from there in a one mile turf race run 4 weeks ago at Santa Anita.......Rispoli lands on our top choice but we still get an excellent rider in J J Hernandez at the controls

11  Warrens Candy Man

8  Discretionary Day
