Santa Anita for Friday 23 April 2021

Kentucky Derby Day and our full card selections for Churchill Downs (usually 14 races) is only a week away. Click on the 2021 Kentucky Derby logo for details.

Best of luck as always!

race 1   average clarity

7  Kittyhawk Lass   appreciates ample time between starts and gets plenty of it today as his last racing endeavor was on 10 Jan.......trainer has had a dismal SA meeting and seems due to get his mojo back.......small drop should help as should sticking with jock J J Hernandez who is (3 1 2 0) on this Palma five year old mare

2  Clearly Gone   bug boy Centeno should stay out of trouble as it appears he can get a nice stalk position behind the 5 horse who should find the SA crowd a little too tough from what he has faced on the sod at Tup..........if that is what transpires he should finish well carrying only 111 lbs

3  Miss Flawless

6  Little Bird

race 2    average clarity

3  Scary Fast Smile   trainer Mark Glatt is often at his most dangerous with dirt sprinters come off of 45 to 90 breaks........four year old has been away for 66 days and is training sharply.........all three lifetime races with the blinkers on are better then par Santucci figs......and all three races were with today's jock T C Baze up

1 Thrive   trainer Mike McCarthy seems to be snapping out of a mini slump and he has a good shot to add to his win total here with this colt who like our top selection appears ready to run another race that at worse should be a par like run for the Cal-bred MSW level.......sharp a.m. work hints like last time Pratt will attempt to go gate to wire

race 3    average clarity

(AE 10 Super Game has a shot if she draws into the field)

5  Another Eddie   on the right end of the learning curve with few reasons not to believe the positive trend can't continue this afternoon.........Ben Cecil's filly has been off since 13 Feb but her a.m. work hints she is fit and ready to roll

2  Big Stretch   very solid 5F work on the SA training track and it was put in just 5 days ago.........that hints this filly is feeling good when it counts the most as in right before her race......late runner seemingly will get a lively pace up front with multiple speed types signed up.......if that is the case she should be flying late with a strong finisher in Rispoli up

3  Dylans Wild Cat

6  Starship Defiant

8  Michalska

race 4    average clarity

5  Sorriso  difficult to split our three selections but this Metz six year old gets top billing as it is hard to ignore his 4 for 5 record at today's 5 1/2F dirt distance and where 3 of his wins were by wide margins (2 1/2, 4 1/4 & 7 1/4 lengths)

3  Black Storm   2 & 5 might wind up in a fast speed duel and if that comes to fruition this late runner would be in the drivers seat turning for home

2  Reedley

race 5    average clarity

4  Itsthattime   changed barns in his latest and vaulted forward running his best adjusted for trouble Santucci fig since 29 May 2020.......and.........he showed he can handle the sod in Jan. as his stride on it was just fine in what a appeared to be a sprint tune-up.......Hernandez wisely stays put on this O'Neill four year old who should go off a price

7  Constitutionaffair   hard to argue with (5 2 2 1) lifetime in routes and (3 2 1 0) in turf routes.....and like our top selection he is capable of winning on or off of the pace.......should be tough

2  Sea of Liberty

1  Liar Liar

race 6    average clarity

2  Lucky Long Legs   decent 1st ever at a route in her latest and she sure is outworking her competition preparing for today's endeavor.......and when D'Amato legs up his step daughter Jessica Pyfer his stock has been very "live"

3  Cowboys Daughter   toss race two back as she might have disliked the "good" turf surface.....toss her last as she might have disliked having the blinkers taken off.......blinkers back on today and drops down for her 1st route dirt race.......and there are signs she is better on the dirt than the sod.......trainer Tom Bell is quietly having a nice SA meeting (14 3 3 3 )........seems dangerous

5  Our Bonnie Lass

race 7    average clarity

(Note:  11 AE  Tom's Surprise has a shot if he draws into the field)

4  Luvluv   no play on the board in his latest and/or a good rated turf tell me to ignore the race......race 2 back is very strong and was run at today's 6 1/2 furlong turf distance.......preparatory work is improved supporting the notion we can ignore his last race

5  Fratelli   lone speed here and Prat up so that is one dangerous proposition for the opposition.........poor effort in his only lifetime grass race but he broke thru the gate prior to the start which might have unnerved this gelding........deserves  another shot to handle the lawn

6  Bang for Your Buck

8  Hammering Lemon

9  Perfectionistic

race 8    average clarity

3  Delta Wind   John Sadler has been rather hot of late so you best take note of the strong set of works for this 2nd time starter who tossed a dull effort as the favorite in her MSW debut which was in a 6F turf race.......switches to the dirt where she trained well prior and since her debut.......doubt she liked the grass but should run well on the dirt......gets in very light which should help her fly early

4  Alice Marble   the D'A now takes over the training duties from Miyadi of this four year old filly who hasn't raced since Oct. but trains as if she is ready to rock n roll for the hot Phil D'Amato.......supporting the notion she is "ready" is the fact Prat wants the mount and he is 8 for 16 with 7 others in money riding for the D'A.......yikes

7  Omg It's Jessica

8  Fi Fi Pharaoh

6  Miss O'Brien

race 9    above average clarity

3  Golden Journey   quite the move forward in her 3rd lifetime start and 1st in a route race for this Richard Baltas three year old filly.......number she earned was better than par for the MC50K level and the pace she sat close to was very fast.......appears to be the controlling speed in the race and that is bad news for the competition with 1st time Prat on her back

2  Hyland Haven   takes the ever dangerous somewhat magical drop from MSW racing to MC50K........all 3 lifetime route grass races fit well at today's lower level......hot trainer especially with his turf stock and decent turf jock remains up......should be motoring fast in the late stages

5  For the Good Times

8  Metaphar

4  Alot of Music   scratched out
