Del Mar for Friday 22 July 2022 Opening Day

Opening day at Del Mar with a sell out crowd and by my book the best race caller in the nation back in the booth in Trevor Denman. Life is good!!

A special welcome to those of you that only play Del Mar and maybe a few other special days at the other tracks. Great to have you back!!!

Next publication is for Del Mar on Sunday 24 July.

Race card seems decent if the track plays fair.

Best of luck as always!!

race 1  average clarity

2  Carnivore   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE nicely improved since the blinkers were taken off this three year old gelding (4 1 2 0 1) who was just claimed by one dangerous "1st out following a claim" trainer in Robertino Diodoro........gelding seems best stalking the lead and seems likely to be in that position today and in a race that seemingly sets up for those close up early.......recent a.m. prowess is solid

7  Americaredwhiteblu   last two races fit (better than par for today's given level Santucci figs) and his morning work hints he is ready to fire another better than par race our top choice he should be fairly close up in the early stages.....hard not to like this Mark Glatt colt

9  Conundrum

8  Breakfast Ride

4  Papale

race 2  average clarity

4  Fast Buck   very positive rider switch to Maldonado especially for a speed grass sprinter.......that and the cut back in distance should be a his lone 5F grass race this DeAlba four year old broke slowly and still ran a 55:2......yikes

8  Time to Party   beat our top choice in his last racing endeavor and he is proven on the Dmr grass course (2 1 1 0) and both races were at 5 furlongs........ironically Maldonado was up but he does receive the services of SA's leading jock J J Hernandez

3  Clayton Delany

2  Gregory's Pride

5  Party Game

1  Raging Waters

race 3  below average clarity

2  Single Me Out   believe trainer Mulhall means business 1st out since she took over the training duties of the gelding who has not raced since October the very tightly spaced prolonged work regiment.......all muscled up and ready to roll which makes sense as this seven year old is risked for a $20K tag

4  Priano   2 for 3 on the dirt lifetime and in the race he did not win he had little shot at the winners circle because of a bad rider/trainer combo the last couple of months in Cedillo & usually this colt should be in the mix from the opening bell.......hard not to like

7  Pyeong Chang

3  Big Flame

5  Big Scott Daddy

race 4  average clarity

6  Manitowish   vaulted forward in his latest racing endeavor and the strength of the race is disguised by about about 5 or 6 lengths of trip......gelding was 3 wide up near a strong set of fractions and yet still came home a winner........Miyadi claimed him and places him in a very realistic spot.......not sure if he is as good at a route as he is in a sprint but he has the potential to be a handful for his competition if he is

2  Exclusive Speaker   best rider this gelding has seen in many a moon is up today in J J Hernandez........five year old has improved in his last two races with a new trainer and with the blinkers going on........if he runs as well on the Del Mar dirt as he just did on the Pln dirt he should be a major factor in the outcome of this race

1  Secret Touch

4  Big Buzz

10  Of Good Report

race 5  average clarity

5  Chedda Cash   very fast 3F and 4F works for this Luis Mendez 1st timer who is out of a mare who has tossed 6 winners from 6 starters and two of which were also Stakes of the best gate jocks on the grounds is aboard in Edwin Maldonado.......such a deal

6  Uncontrollable  $130K Cal-bred was just purchased 3 months ago so Mike McCarthy and company got a good look at what they were getting..........last preparatory 4F drill is awfully strong for a two year old Cal-bred filly as in 46:4 Hg and the work was on the Del Mar dirt.....draws J J Hernandez who is 32% win in sprints with a large sampling

4  Danzing Cat

9  Smokin Cheena

3  One Smokin' Rita

8  Sarande

race 6  above average clarity

7  Eddie's New Dream   four year old filly is a perfect 3 for 3 the last 3X racing with Lasix and it was also the last 3X she wasn't in a Stakes race........alw race today.......back on for one on the Del Mar grass.......big effort in her latest where was was only 3 1/4L behind the winner at the wire in a Grade 1 and with not the best of a.m. work......solid trio of O'Neill/Gutierrez/Reddam......plenty to like

2  Macadamia   running lines for this BRZ invader hint she will produce more in her 2nd out after a long layoff and 2nd out in the good old U S of since her return to the race wars are improved and the improvement is rather subtle.......outstanding turf trainer in D'Amato

4  Charges Dropped

1  California Kook

9  Freedom Lass

race 7  average clarity

4  Anacapa   no action on the board for this Carla Gaines 2nd time starter in her MSW debut which likely was a muscle her up turf tightener as only the grass can do tab since her debut is vastly improved......with Smith getting off to ride our 4th choice this filly should go off a big price.......come on Joe Bravo

2  Infinite Empire   filly has been away since her MSW 2nd place finish11 months ago where she had a bad trip........1st place came back to win a Grade 2 - 3rd place ran back to win a MSW race.......very impressive work regiment......all systems go for this R Mandella three year old

9  Too Bossy

8  Runninwiththeboyz

10  Keychain Girl

11  Belle Cherie

race 8  average clarity

1  Mackinnon   colt is loaded with talent and seems at her very best racing on the sod and especially in turf one mile affairs.......her race in the BCJuvTrf-G1 was a dynamite 3rd place finish vs a terrific group.....prior to the BC race she wheeled off 3 straight daylight wins at the one mile turf distance.......good post and back to J J Hernandez who has been aboard for all 5 of her lifetime grass races

8  Balnikhov   a nose away from being a perfect 2 for 2 at today's one mile turf distance........blinkers on in last did not work today.......race two back was a solid 2nd in a Grade 2 at CD on Derby day.....and the effort is better than it appears in print......Rispoli gets the call from D'Amato and almost everything Umberto has gotten from D'Amato has been very "live" over the last three months

3  St Anthony

4  Boise

6  Castle Leoch

2  Anmer Hall

race 9  average clarity

10  Kid Corleone   tremendous early speed for this colt who not only won his only dirt race (2nd lifetime start) but did so despite setting torrid fractions.......same track and distance for today's 3rd start but 1st since 13 Nov........fresh speed is dangerous speed......J J Hernandez retains the mount.......hard not to like

9  Exaulted   connections seemingly have been way too ambitious racing this fellow in three straight Grade 2 races as it took this horse 4 races to graduate......finally placed in an alw race where he fits fine if he handles his 1st to date at Del Mar

2  Code Duello

12  Murray

3  Patron d'Oro

4  Houndstooth

race 10  below average clarity

2  Man Among Men   MSW 1st time starter has been able to hit the track every 7 days or less going back to 19 May for Richard Mandella and company.......Mandella owns one of the better records with runners making their debut on the lawn.......colt's pedigree for the turf is outstanding.......hope this three year old lives up to his name

3  Pray for Me Ray   two straight bad trips to start this guy's career with Mike Smith up especially his MSW debut which was on the grass........good post for Smith to work with.......hopefully money Mike will be out to make amends

11  Admiralty Place

6  National Generaux

4  Birth of Cool

12  Granlusso
