Santa Anita for Saturday 25 March 2023

The start of three straight days that The Racing Digest will cover.

Best of luck as always !

race 1  average clarity

2  Balthazar   sprint-sprint-route scenario for this Neil Drysdale three year old's 3rd lifetime start......both turf sprints are decent and the gelding owns a pedigree that should handle a one mile grass race.......one of Neil's better stats these days is 1st at a route.......gelding should be on or near the lead from the get go in a race lacking speed

4  Classically   decent turf sprint effort run off of a extended layoff of 17 months.......the turf sprint should set this guy up for a solid one mile grass race today......stout rider/trainer combo (Hernandez/D'Amato) at the helm to the tune of 36% win over the last two months

5  Eastboundh

race 2  below average clarity

1  Let Him Do   tepid top selection seems best at today's 6F distance and the Sadler three year old colt might have improved endurance cutting back from a 6 1/2 furlong dirt race to a 6F dirt race........J J Hernandez stays put

4  Top of My Game   tough to run well off of 9 days rest shipping from SA to GG......maybe O'Neill gave it a shot because this colt raced well off of 8 days rest but the "ship" was short as in SA to Lrc.......13 days rest go around.......back too quick again ?........we shalll see

3  Littlebrotherjoey

race 3 average clarity

6  Quaria Thunder   seemingly a nice pickup for D'Amato of an east coast invader who is (4 2 1 0) on firm turf........four year old filly seems best with contact with the front end of things and she has a decent shot at being in the vanguard early in this spot.......and.......with the ship and win money at stake the connections have plenty of incentive to have this filly fit and ready to roll

4  Crimson Rose   four year old filly is (3 2 1 0) when on the lead and she has a shot at getting an early lead today.......1st at a route is a ? mark but Knapp can do no wrong these days and it seems noteworthy that this filly just won a turf sprint with the rail out 30 feet like it is today

3  Dendera

5  Control Function

race 4  average clarity

3  Bailey's Budget   trainer is 0 for his last 20 with MSW 1st time starters but this gelding owns an impressive looking work regiment that is too good to ignore........that and he has shown that he owns some speed which is usual a good thing in abbreviated dirt sprints like this 5 1/2 furlong affair

6  Blue Cheese Olive   another 1st time starter who looks as if he is meant and ready to roll at a high level today.......and Peter Miller is more than capable with a MSW 1ster.......mom has tossed two winners from two starters and one of them was also a Graded Stakes winner

4  Royal Halo

race 5  below average clarity

2  Wirly Girly   lifetime best was run in her MSW debut and it is disguised in its strength as she stalked a decent pace on a day the turf sprints were dominated by off the pace runners.......1st time up for MC......usually a very dangerous move

7  Con Seal and Kerry   like our top choice this Steve Knapp filly is in a maiden claiming race for the 1st time......trainer has been hot.......1st on the sod today is a ? mark........mom has tossed one grass winner

5  Thunder Run

4  Princess Midnight

race 6  average clarity

3  Tizzy Twister   last race which was her 1st dirt route is arguably her lifetime best race and sure fits at today's lower level.........that and she ran a turf route in her 2nd start which is much better than appears in print.......she was given a brutal ride losing about 7 or 8L to trip and she was only 7 1/2L behind the winner at the wire

2  Sangre Azul   good trips in her last two races given by 7 lbs bug boy Alsagoor who rides thru the Milton Pineda claim.....trainer has been hot of late with his claims.........like her last two races she should sit 1st or 2nd from the opening bell and if she holds form tough thru-out

4  Semi Sweet

race 7  average clarity

5  Old Pal   Glatt three year old colt was pounded at the windows and ran well running 2nd despite a rough trip.........that race was a 6 1/2 turf affair and her pedigree is solid to handle a turf route.......and the meets top gun stays put.......Glatt is 4 for his last 12 "2nd time grass race"

3  Johnny Paycheck   5th career start for this D'Amato four year old and this is the 1st time this gelding gets to race off of relatively short rest......that gives him the potential to put forth his lifetime best this afternoon.......and.......his a.m. work since his 19 Feb race supports the notion

2  Country Boy

6  J D's Rude Boy

8  Chrome to Riches

race 8  average clarity

1  Violent Runner   dangerous looking claim by Steve Knapp as it appears he has a handle on his new acquisition as his five year old mare is seemingly training the best of her career......she has won 5 of her last 6 races with the blemish coming in a 6F Grade 3 sprint like today.......but note the the winner of the Grade 3 ran 2nd to this mare in her previous race

3  Dance to the Music   seems best sprinting on the dirt at SA with a win in an alw race and 2nd in a Grade 3 both of which were at today's 6F distance........she races turf to dirt today and 2nd out following a needed layoff as her form tailed off badly in summer......if she "finds herself" today she should be tough thru-out especially with leading jock Hernandez up

2  Half Past Twelve

race 9  average clarity

4  Lamplighter Jack   versatile gelding has handled turf, dirt, and the synthetic to the tune of 10 for 23 lifetime........most of his career fits solidly here so this appears to be a nice addition to the Barocio barn who has plenty of incentive to win 1st out with this eastern invader with the extra moola available for winning 1st time racing at SA

3  Weegee   two wins and 2 seconds since Jeff Mullins claimed.....trainer is red hot of late and he is usually very tough in grass races.........hard not seeing this gelding giving a good account of himself for a 5th straight race

1  Moody Jim

2  Kennebec

5  Overdue
