Santa Anita for Friday 21 April 2023

The Racing Digest will have a publication for 5 of the next 6 racing days at Santa Anita. (21, 23, 28, 29, 30 April). Next up a 10 race card on Sunday.

Best of luck as always !

Top choice won 3 and ran 2nd in 3 races. 2nd choice won 3 races.

race 1  average clarity

(2 won and paid $14.40, P5 was top, 3rd, 3rd, top, 2nd pick for $1,894.40)

2  Thunderheart   trainer Keith Craigmyle is 4 for his last 9 running a given horse 2nd out following a layoff and that is the case here for this five year old gelding who just ran his lifetime best in the 5 1/2F version of this conditioned claiming turf race a month ago......should be the one to overcome if this gelding can run similar today

4  Tangledupingrey   blinkers go back on after running without them for two races and that appears to be a good move as to date this colt has been a "lead type only".....lone lifetime win was run at SA at today's 6F turf distance and with today's jock Umberto Rispoli up who wired the field

7  Petruchio

1  Franklin One Star

8  Lansdown

race 2  average clarity (4-3 exacta$24.20)

6  American Conquest   lifetime best and a strong fit here was run in her 2nd lifetime start......so......2nd out after a layoff combined with a significant drop in MC and a switch in jocks to the meets top gun in J J Hernandez makes her the one to beat

3  Midnight Silence   trainer Patty Gallagher is often at his most dangerous the 2nd time he races a horse that he takes over and especially so when he drops multiple levels ......both are the case today......Joe Bravo wisely stays put

4  Hot Road Mama

race 3 average clarity (1-6 exacta $66.20)

2  Soul of a Warrior   lone turf sprint race without the blinkers on and using Lasix stands out as her best (by far) to date......that race was run at 6 1/2F and 6F seems like a better fit.......good to see Gutierrez stick with the Papaprodromou four year old filly for a 3rd consecutive race

6  Precipice   $160K is a lot to pay for a Pa-bred especially for one who failed in both of her lifetime races as the favorite out east at Prx......trainer Rolando Quinonez picks up the three year old filly who owns a decent pedigree for the grass and she gets to run on it for the 1st time this afternoon......dangerous sort

1  Irish Patsy

7  Pretty Rena

8  Miss Polo Bar

race 4  above average clarity (4 won paid $5.80, COLD 4-6 exacta $11.80)

4  Pequena Tormenta   lifetime best and her only win was run off of an 8 month layoff......last race for this five year old mare was 10 months ago.......1st time Jeff Mullins as the trainer......powerful recent 5F best of 99 58:1 drill.....and when Jeff legs up Berrios his runners are almost always very live....hard not to like

6  Awesome Taylor   most of this girl's lifetime races fit very well versus today's competition and the trainer sure has had quite the year.......and Barocio is especially dangerous when he legs up Frey who took this four year old filly over our 4th selection......another who is hard not to like

3  Quicklikeabunny

1  Miss Kaline

race 5  below average clarity

3  Johnny Paycheck   four year old finally got to run a turf route (running a nice 2nd) which pedigree wise fits him.......continues to train like a happy healthy gelding for one nice turf trainer in Phil D'Amato.......like last time look for this gelding to be in the mix from the get go and tough thru-out

5  Workday  one of Sadler's better stats is "blinkers off" and that is the case today for this colt who draws the meets top gun in J J Hernandez for the 1st time........three year old seems to need ample time between starts so you know Sadler will have him fit and ready as it might be a couple of months until he can race again

1  Herecomegeorgieboy

7  Chrome to Riches

race 6  average clarity

3  Con Seal and Kerry   sure like her pedigree better for the dirt and especially for a route.....trainer Steve Knapp has had a banner year and he can keep the good times rolling here with this filly who should be on or near the front end at a distance on the SA dirt that usually favor those that do

4   Sweet Hello   not crazy about her chances of getting the two turns but it seems as though she has a shot at getting loose on the lead which is usually a very dangerous thing going a mile on the Santa Anita dirt

6  Prestigious

race 7  average clarity

4  Boss Scully   pounded at the windows in his latest race and did not disappoint as he crushed his competition pressing a fast quarter on his way to a 3 length 5 1/2 furlong turf win which was run in excellent time for the day.......1st at a route this afternoon and the Koriner colt has been prepared well in the a.m. for one and he owns a good pedigree (especially for a Cal-bred) to handle the added distance

5  Old Pal   two solid lifetime grass races to start his career for Glatt and company.......whereas our top choice should be in the vanguard from the get go this three year old colt should sit towards the rear of the field and come flying down the stretch

1  Tom and Jazzy

2  Thirsty Pappy

race 8  average clarity  (2nd, top pick double $33.60)

4  My Harbors Dream   last three dirt races for this four year old since the Brinkerhoff claim fit well in this spot......drop down in claiming today doesn't concern me much as the lone win for this Brinkerhoff gelding came 1st following the claim where he dropped him $5K and won for fun by 5L.....jock upgrade for today to boot

8  Octopus   race lacks speed types and this Peter Eurton gelding seems to own as much as anyone in this 10 horse field......trainer has not won 1st out following a claim with his last 12 claims but he drops this gelding one level and he has put some nice drills into him......decent speed jock in Cedillo up

3  Cross Examine

10  My Dominator

6  Midnight Special

race 9  average clarity (6 won and paid $7.00)

(trifecta hit ice COLD 6-8-7 and paid $121.40. COLD exacta $31.00. 6-8-7-2 super $571.60)

6  Miss Lizzy   Kentucky invader takes the ever dangerous drop from MSW to MC50K for Doug O'Neill and company.......figs earned in both sprints on the AW at TP fit well vs. today's line-up.......1st on the lawn but this filly owns a good pedigree for it as her two siblings were both turf winners

8  Mygalsdawnnlori   like our top selection this Eurton four year old filly takes the dangerous somewhat magical drop from MSW to MC50K........like the cut back in distance and especially so for a filly stalking such a lightning fast pace in the one mile grass race......dangerous sort

7  Bella Baby

1  Map to My Heart

2  Miss Joannie
