Santa Anita for Saturday 13 May 2023

Card seems decent once again. Like yesterday more than half of the races do not have the morning line favorite as the top choice.

Best of luck as always !

race 1  above average clarity

5  Natural Power   solid effort in his latest race which was run at today's level but 1/2 furlong less.....works since his 9 April race suggest he is up for even more today and another 1/16 of turf to cover should be a plus......red hot rider in Desormeaux stays put......hard not to like

6  See Through It   six year old is (9 6 1 2) over his last 9 races run which were run at 4 different tracks and on conventional dirt,  AW & turf......and he beat our top choice in his last race......and today's rider Maldonado has won the last three times he has been aboard this six year old

4  Kant Beat the Rock

race 2  average clarity

3  It's My House   needs the lead and like last out he should get it......he smoked a 135:1 mile on the dirt winning wire to wire and he carried 119 lbs......115 lbs today and once again it appears that the bug boy can be loose on the lead.......good rider/trainer comb in Aquilar/Glatt

4  Piroli   (5 3 2 0) at today's one mile dirt distance and two of the wins were at Santa Anita.........look for Hernandez to stalk our top selection and put the heat on him late out of the 2nd turn or in the stretch

1  Arham

race 3 average clarity

4  Echo Canyon   weak looking group of locals so it makes for a good spot for an invader who appears sharp right now as in a lifetime best fig in his latest .......and........a very fast 45:4 H work at Tup since his 17 April race at Tup which was run at 7 1/2F on the turf

6  New York Dreams   lone lifetime win came running a one mile turf route then a 6 1/2 furlong turf sprint.....and this gelding won by 5 big lengths.....turf one mile race in last and once again a cut back in distance to a 6 1/2F turf sprint.......sharp a.m. work to boot......Knapp legs up his go to guy in Tiago Pereira

3  Beaudacious

race 4  below average clarity

3  Casia   jock upgrade for today and J J Hernandez should be able to get a nice stalking trip behind a suspect leader in the 2 horse who I believe has slipped off of form some.....if that is the case the meets top gun can draw away down the stretch and hold off the Calvary charge coming late

1  California Bling   filly from the Mendez barn drops a couple of MC levels in start number seven.......she owns figs on the AW and the turf that fit well in this spot......and by my book she has a better pedigree for the conventional dirt......some possible upside potential here

4  Sugar Sugar

race 5  average clarity

5  Giovinazzo   on the improve with each and every start and the cut back of 1/2 turf furlong to 6F appears to be a plus for this Doug O'Neill three year old colt.......that and he just worked a nice reassuring near bullet 4F work 6 days ago......Maldonado wisely remains up for a 3rd straight time

8  Neon Lights   no action on the board (gimme) for this Knapp three year old gelding in his first race in the USA (a 6 1/2F turf sprint) at 7F following a decent debut in Ireland on the AW......nice 5F work since......believe it is go go go go go today

6  Yogi Boy

9  Act Three

2  Watsonville

race 6  average clarity

1  Book Smart   last time this four year old was up for a tag he won.....he is up for one today and Geovanni Franco is back aboard after being absent for his last race and Geo has done a nice job riding this fellow the only two mounts he has been on him.......and......the abbreviated sprint distance of 5 1/2 should be a good fit

4  Goldenspa   three speed types in this field of seven in a 5 1/2F affair suggests there will be enough pace up front for a late runner to have a shot to get up in time.......and this O'Neill three year old colt appears to be the most dangerous of the late runners in the field

5  Suzie Qzz Brother

6  Midnight Lightning

race 7  average clarity

8  Long Mayshe Reign   one lucky MSW debut for the connections as their MSW 1st time starter got loose with a relatively soft pace and cruised to an easy win.......and that "easy" likely stress-free muscle building gate to wire win should have left plenty in the tank for today.......that and Mr Glatt is 4 for his last 12 "2nd grass race"

6  Irish Royalty   invader from GG just ran his lifetime best for trainer Reid France 1st out following a claim running 1:10:4 at GG on the AW......1st on the turf today but he owns a good pedigree for it......dangerous sort

9  Barely Functional

4  Man Overboard

2  Left Hand Man

race 8  average clarity

1  Dr. Schivel   Mark Glatt (very dangerous off of long layoffs) five year old is quite good racing fresh off of the bench and he is (6 4 1 0) competing at 6F on the dirt and he is 2 for 2 racing at 6F at SA and one of the wins was a Grade 2 6F 3 1/4 length win......and Cal's top gun J J Hernandez lands here

4  C Z Rocket   nine year old isn't quite what he once was but on a given day when his ailments are doing well he can still sprint with the best of them......Miller's elder statesman should be on the scene in the late stages of this 6F sprint

2  None Above the Law

race 9  average clarity

2  Planetario   Richard Mandella has put 72 furlongs of work into this five year old from Brazil since 4 March.....that suggests he should be fit to get 12F today despite being away since 18 June 22 when he ran fairly well in his 1st race in the good old U S of A......3 wins at 10F or 12F in as many starts in Brazil and 2 of the wins were G1 affairs

4  Offlee Naughty   solid Grade 2 win racing 10F on the grass off of a 4 month break.......3 maintenance works since the comeback win on 9 April should help him get the 12 furlongs of sod today

3  Dicey Mo Chara

7  Midcourt

8  Opry
